Yes indeed it is 9489 with the 2nd paint scheme which happened to be on the T18 this morning, packed.  I thought the T18 needed longer buses, not shorter ones.  Sad to say a while  back I actually saw a 30 footer on the T18, granted it was during the midday, but still.

wow...this season's Bussian Roulette is looking pretty interesting so far! I wonder how things will go once the newer buses go into service.

BTW yesterday morning I saw both 4217 and 9376 on the G8...9376 looking like it's been freshly rehabbed. Plus, 4091 and 4094 are @ Montgomery...both on the J2 yesterday (add 4091 to the list of buses with purple windows)

Also, it seems like Virginia is going back to the way it used to be...with the upper 4300s in Arlington, some 2000s and lower 4200s back on VA routes...ah yes, good times...

3907 on the 24P BALLSTON STATION.
4227 on the 18H (I think).  Wasn't 4227 a Montgomery bus?
9410 at Pentagon Station. Wasn't this also a Montgomery bus?

Really i dont think they need them i think WMATA is just thinking of another route that they can put the artics on without causing harm to them. I was suprided when i just got out of the store i saw a BRT pulled up saying "R1 ALDELPHI".

In this case, some might end up on routes like the 30s (rush hour Bladensburg trips), 79, 80, D6, G8, H2/H4, or P6...now those would be interesting sightings!

Now who thinks I was nuts for wanting to burn them off on the 79, 80 and D6 rather than exposing them to the hell known as the U8?  ;D
Title: Re: March 2009 Observations

I think they are being put on busy Bladensburg routes and routes with large bus stop zones already in place.  They aren't going to show up on the H lines, they aren't that busy and they wouldn't be able to pull in to many stops. The D6 doesn't get all that busy either.  The Rs are busy but not artic worthy under most circumstances, although artics on those routes would be a good way to provide more capacity without running more trips on that route.

Speaking of running more trips on that line, since thats a Bladensburg route would PG county gov fund more trips?

Funding isn't related to where the trips operate from.  The Rs are a PG route, so either PG or Maryland would be responsible for increasing the subsidy if they wanted more trips on that line.  Metro can then figure out for itself how to operate the route in the most efficient manner.

79 might pull one off
80 doesn't need tics
D6 has very tight turns (especially on Q Street)
G8 isn't that busy
H line could be a possibility
P6 (just hell no)

I think the R's are a DC route, which is why they come out of Bladensburg.  Other MoCo routes such as the C2 and 4 that operate in PG County are Montgomery routes.

Back in the 80's, artics were routinely operated on the R8, now R2.

For the umpteenth time, artics have a smaller turning radius than regular buses.  If a 40 footer can handle the tight turns on Q Street, so can an artic.

So DC is paying to operate those routes deep into Maryland and PG County?  What do they gain from funding routes that appear to be primarily feeding PG residents into the Fort Totten Station if they are in fact providing that funding?

It might be a relic of the days before Landover and Montgomery came into existence. Didn't the DC-based depots handle a lot more work prior to the influx of suburban depots in the 80's?

Where should the 80's/R's be based out of? The union situation in Landover might block such a move and the other willing depots (Montgomery and Northern) are either maxed out or are too far.
Title: Re: March 2009 Observations

There is nothing wrong with having the 80s and Rs coming out of Bladensburg, the garage isn't that far away from Fort Totten and Brookland to begin with.  I just can't imagine DC wanting to pay the bulk of the subsidies required to operate those types of services since they don't really serve DC.

I think there's a new desk person on the weekend at Gaithersburg garage. LOL I noticed it myself when I was in Gaithersburg last weekend. I'm ok with using the New Flyers on the weekends honestly. Now this upcoming pick the blocks will change quite a bit so you might find New Flyers everywhere and not just the 55 most of the time during the week.

Also to note, I saw WMATA 4075 on the Y this morning (3/9/09).

That's not the reason. It has to do with the number of miles put on the odometer.

OrionFlyer, I did indeed see 2 Flxibles from the 1995 model year on Bladensburg routes.  I am not making this up.  4062 & 4063 are now Bladensburg buses!  All of Bladensburg's Orion Vs (4200-4219) are on their way to Arlington, which will close permanently later this month.

Yesterday, spotted an Orion 7 in the new scheme in the back of Bladensburg. Somewhat reminds me of MUNI's O7HEVs in the silver paint.

heh...I didn't see any other than 4094, 4097, and 4102 in Montgomery territory today...but then again I was in VA and DC for the most part.

To add to that...I saw 4378 on the 36 southeast-bound...looks like another set of buses are moving in this crazy bussian roulette.

Other stuff:
4261 is back at Northern...seen on the 70
2063 @ Arlington...seen on the 1B
2033 and 2038 remain @ Western
4200 at Arlington...seen @ Rosslyn on the 3...and it still has the Ikea wrap (no picture though =( )
4209 at Arlington...rode it on the 4A to Rosslyn then it became the 4B
4211 at Arlington...seen on the 24P
4235 and 4239 @ Arlington...both seen @ Ballston
9346 at Bladensburg...seen on the P2 with a non-working sign

oh, and one more interesting little thing...Ride-On's 5417 on the 81...never thought I'd see that even though I know 5417 and more Gilligs are at Nicholson. Too bad I was on the 54 going home when I saw it as I left Rockville...

ALSO...the programming for the route 47 on 5763 (which used to say Parkside/Grosvenor) is fixed and now says Bethesda via Mont. Mall

I'll post pics in the observation pics thread when I can

This might have been mentioned earlier, didn't see it so here it goes.  I saw this morning 2819 dressed in the new "Express" scheme.  Now if there was to be a bus done like this, it should have been a D41LFR and not a C40LFR. This bus was parking in the Bladensburg lot.

Someone mentioned that an Orion VII in the new scheme, that might have been 2627, as a few weeks ago this bus was spotted with practically no engine at Bladensburg, the whole back bottom gone and the engine on the ground.

Also at Bladensburg saw 4042 repainted *in the old paint scheme BTW*.

Notable sightings include seeing 4238 on the 2A and 4237 on the 22A.

Is the Express scheme similar to the Metro Extra scheme?
Ah. So I get the number. As for 2627, it was parked on the side in the back the other day but today there was a Flx Metro B there. As for the no engine, that is kinda odd. I don't think those JDs aren't breaking down really so far for being only 3 years old. I'd love to see one of these repowered to ISL G.

The "Express" scheme is like the "Local" scheme but where the red is, it's blue.  The current "MetroExtra" scheme has the blue front and the silver rear.  Whether WMATA is going to modify the "MetroExtra" scheme remains to be seen.

What about where the curved stripes are? Are those blue and white or red and white?

I know the first 14 C40lfrs are branded for Metro Extra. Since 2819 is in the express theme what can it be used for? What Express routes does Bladensburg operate? Or will WMATA change Metro Extra scheme to Express? Somehow I think that's going to happen because WMATA keeps calling the 79 Express and not Limited.

Or Bladensburg will recieve the new Hybrids in the Express theme and operate the S9 with C40lfrs in the Express theme as well on that route.

I might have to take a different look at the buses at Carmen E Turner to be sure they aren't in a new MetroExtra scheme and not express.  I thought when I saw 2819 in the blue back scheme that I saw express.  But if buses are going to be branded, why wouldn't WMATA paint them in different colors, like LA.

Then again this is WhyMATA.

Why does everyone keep saying the new paint job is red and silver? That's Orange and silver.

I would agree that it is bright, but in my mind these three are red/silver

There are countless automotive colors that are officially named one thing but look like another color entirely. The WMATA red was probably the result of a high content of yellow in the mix as well as some white to give it a high visual "pop" to catch the eye. In some lighting conditions it can look orange.

Some years ago when Marlboro cigarettes was the primary sponsor of the Ferrari Formula 1 team, purists complained that Marlboro's red was closer to orange than it was to pure Ferrari red. It was red, but a different shade.

If anyone has access to a color gamut ("draw" in MS Word) you'll probably see that WMATA's red is definitely in the red spectrum. Remember, the flag is RED, white and blue

It is red.

It's definitely not orange because WMATA's theme would be red white and blue...since it serves our nation's capital.

but if it does look orange to you, then you gotta get ur eyes checked (no offense, seriously)

Maybe it's just me. In bright sunlight, it looks orange. Here's what I think. Maybe WMATA should've painted it bright red so it wouldn't look orange in some conditions.

I have no idea why the TITAN sign on 2801 is still saying Not in Service. It was working a month ago. Some people don't know how to manually program the sign to show the route and destination. Clever Devices doesn't always interface correctly.

Totally forgot about that (obviously).  That must have been about 10 years ago at this point and very short lived, right?

I was racking my brain and running through the numbers to see if anything rang a bell, and nothing did which is why I made my original post.  Funny thing is as soon as I read your reply, it came back to me.

I could swear I saw 2103 on the F12 this morning. There was a 2100 series bus leaving Landover Division when I was coming back from CET yesterday. It had an ad on it. I know it was a 2100 series because of the vents on the side. I thought it was just stopping by there but it ended up being on the F12 this morning.

So why don't you like the bus branding program?  So I guess a few "locals" popped up on the 79 in return?

Before I left for Florida, I saw 4074 at Shady Grove Station, Q2 bus...

So if anyone can find 4073, then that will determine where the Bladensburg/Montgomery border is.

The Z2 now stops on River Road at Landy Lane according to the bus stop sign posted at that location, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for a bus to Silver Spring from that location...

I saw some WMATA bus stop mistakes in Takoma Park today also. The "F2" apparently goes down Philadelphia Ave now...

yea speaking of random numbers appearing on bus stops...the Ride-On stop on Somerville Rd (the stop right before Shady Grove West...near Redland Rd), it says routes 53, 55, 57, 63, 66, 59...and 80. I never heard of the 80 before, and I remember before they changed that sign to the newer one, the route 80 appeared on the sign, and even when they replaced that sign with a newer one, the route 80 still appears on the sign. What was the route 80? I never heard of it before, it must be a discontinued route...

I contacted Ride On to correct other bus stop mistakes on Muddy Branch Road and Daimondback Drive in Gaithersburg.  The bus stops there listed Route 78 for a long time and that was recently corrected.  However I have had no luck getting Ride On to note on the bus stops that Route 76 is Monday - Friday only and Route 67 is rush hours only.  Hardly a weekend goes by when I don't have to stop my car and tell someone waiting at the 76 bus stop that they need to change their plans and walk to catch the 54.  They look at me like I'm crazy!  The same situation exists on Great Seneca Highway with the Route 74 which only runs Monday-Friday.

Oh yeah I forgot about that one...did they finally get rid of the number 78 on that stop?

Also...the bus stop at Montgomery Mall...I think it says "47 to Grosvenor" on the Ride-On side, and on the WMATA side I think it still has the 14 and N7 numbers as well.

It appears that all of Arlington's Flxibles have gone to Bladensburg & Montgomery.  4020 was spotted on the F4 yesterday.  Not sure if either that bus was on loan from Annex or that bus is now at Landover.

I would rather see a '98 Orion V anytime over a 2100.  Those things just suck.  And yes I would have loved it if Landover got some Metro Es, I would take them over both the '98 and '00 Orion Vs.  I would taken more Ds than 2100s.

So far, WMATA's soon-to-be-defunct Arlington Division has 4200-4260 (4257 is the highest numbered 4200-series Orion V I have seen on the current Arlington route).  4200-4219 previously operated out of Bladensburg; 4220-4224 previously operated out of Landover for a brief time earlier this year & 4225-4239 previously operated out of Montgomery.  I'm glad that all of the low-to-mid 4200s are reunited at soon-to-be-defunct Arlington Division, which will close permanently on Friday.

The reason being folks are seeing Landover Hybirds is that yes they are training operators on them because when the DE41LFR's/DE62LFR's are sent to northern for the S9 line and regular service. You cant just jump on a hybird an go so they have to get trained on them.

News and notes from today........and yesterday.
-Saw only one DE42LFA sitting in Carmen E Turner
-2506 is out of the rainforest scheme, freshly painted
-2817 is in the "express" new paint scheme
-2820 was doing the 79 during the midday
-Saw a DE42LFA downtown, testing or something or rather.  Tried to get a number but I missed it.

From Yesterday:
-Looks like 4247 was repainted.......or given the best cleaning it ever had, because it looked great.

What I don't understand is why WMATA keeps on repainting some of their active vehicles in the old paint scheme when they're going to repaint all of them in the new scheme eventually. Instead of repainting the old, they should just paint the new.

One of ART's new NABIs is in right now.  It has no fleet numbers and yes it is in the new FUGLY redesign.  If you haven't rode an CNG ODV now is your time to do it because they are becoming history.

Don't rush all at once to ride, take pics and video these things, I know they are the pride of the fleet, but don't get obessed. ::)

BTW from  the dark observation I saw, it looks like there is no change in ART's paint scheme, which I don't know why there should be, as it is fine as it is.  Now SEPTA, THE BUS (PG), NYCTA, yea they need to change their paint scheme.

Also of note all of the SLFs for the 26 line are now parked at FMR.

Could be that they maybe recreating the accident last week to pinpoint exactly what happened.  Investigators will do that alot to finalize any findings they have as to why an accident happened.

If the S9 is supposed to start tomorrow then some should start seeing service tomorrow.  And from the looks of things only a few of the LFAs are on WMATA property.  Right now at Carmen E Turner there are two DE42LFAs and one DE62LFA sitting in there.  I had thought that most of them were delievered and were sitting at West Ox, but that theory was disproven.

The ones for the S9 are probably at Northern already. You probably can't see them because it's an indoor division.

I forgot to mention  this one but a few months back I said that there maybe still an ODV left.

Well aparently there is still an ODV left.  I spotted 63033 sitting in the contractor lot at the intersection of Route 50 and the Beltway.  Whether this thing will see service again is beyond me but it is still in full THE BUS paint scheme with fleet number showing.

NYCTA does not have a new paint scheme.  They have recently started painting the rear end all white.  They used to have the blue strip go around the back with black above the stripe.

All NYCTA, MTAB and LIB buses will eventually look like this.

The color scheme I think you're referring to is that buses for Select Bus Service.  The graphics below the stripe is a wrap.

That said, I have to defend the buses in my home town.  While there's nothing exciting about the white w/blue stripe, I don't think it looks bad.  In fact, I think it looks OK.  My  gripe with this color scheme is that NYCTA has used it since 1981 with very minor changes over the years.  Whatever happens the blue will always be there since it's an official NYS color.

Dr. Gridlock on the Get There Blog on the Wapo website says the bus deliveries are delayed to the flooding of the Red River.

QuotePosted at 11:40 AM ET, 03/30/2009
Where's the Bus?

Join me at 1 p.m. for an online discussion where, among other things, you can make fun of me for not being able to track down one of the new S9 buses this morning.

I started out in Silver Spring at about 8 a.m., thinking that the "Silver Spring station" stop for the new limited stop service would be at the same place where the other S buses start and stop. Nope. It's a couple of blocks away, in front of the Lenox apartments, on Colesville Road westbound near East-West Highway.

But neither I nor a very friendly and helpful Metro supervisor in downtown Silver Spring could figure that out at the time, so he suggested I get on one of the S buses, the locals down 16th Street. I decided to stay on the S4 till I reached Irving Street in Mount Pleasant. There, I found another helpful supervisor who gave me the S9 timetable and route map -- they're being given out along the route today.

He explained why I hadn't seen any of the nice-looking new hybrid electric buses, with the red, white, blue and gray color scheme and "metrobus express" on the side. There are only two in service today. A bunch of others are stuck somewhere around the Red River, their journey east delayed by the midwest floods.

Instead, Metro is using some of the regular looking buses, so watch for the S9 Limited Stop designation on the buses' electronic display signs. I couldn't wait long enough at Irving and 16th for one of those, so I got on the next bus to arrive, an S4, and took that downtown.

Jim Hamre, a Metro planner who has had a lot to do with recent bus line improvements, later confirmed for me that there was a bit of a gap in service at that hour. He says the route has borrowed the number of buses it needs to operate on the one every 10 minutes schedule. And the new hybrid electrics should be in service on the
line by the end of April.

When I walked into the newsroom this morning, my colleague, staff writer Chris Davenport, said he had no trouble at all catching the S9 and proclaimed it a great success.

During our weekly online discussion today, we can talk about any topic you like regarding local transportation. Are you upset about the proposed service cuts on the Metro, Fairfax Connector and Ride On bus routes, or about the Red Line derailments on Friday?

Worried about the HOT lane construction program along the Beltway in Virginia? Wondering when there will be some relief for drivers along I-270? Use this link if you'd likt to submit a question or a comment in advance.

I rode the S9 this afternoon!

2016 on the trip from 16th/I to Silver Spring (East-West/Colesville).  Inoperable destination sign and farebox.  Paper S9 sign taped to the front window; dest. signs displayed Not In Service.

6425 - brand spankin' new - on the trip from East-West/Colesville to McPherson Sq.  Operator had farebox set to charge a $3 express fare!

The Eastern Ave layover was confusing and didn't help the "express" nature of the route.  Two S2s passed along with an S4 on 16th.  We caught, eventually, both S2s but not the S4 - that would have been faster from Silver Spring.

The street supervisor had to chase down a NB New Flyer on the S9 operating via 16th instead of Alaska and Eastern.  Lots of explanation providing to passengers that happened to be waiting at express stops.

For 6425 being a new bus there was a lot of squeaking and rattling going on.  The STOP REQUESTED sign in the interior looks cool outlined in LEDs instead of backlit with incandescent bulbs.  Comfy seats with good support.

While some of us were chasing the S9 (which would be so easier to fan if it ran a little later out of Silver Spring), I chased the Jim Graham Express 14th Street-Adams Morgan Circulator yesterday.

I ended up getting rides on 1103 on one leg and 1112 on the return. Some stops have Circulator signage, others don't. A couple people were even wondering if it went to Georgetown! The route's limited stop nature works like a charm, not even 15 minutes from Columbia Heights to McPherson Square though there is some risk for delays on the Adams Morgan-Columbia Heights stretch though not as bad as U and Columbia on the old 98.

On that tangent, why WMATA didn't extend the 90/92/93 across the Ellington Bridge to Woodley Park to increase service on the 98 route miffs me. I know heritage turnarounds are heritage turnarounds, but still...

/ Don't even get me started on the lack of non-Nats night or weekend service on the N22 replacement route...

I saw 5818 today on the 56 approaching Lakeforest. Apparently it's not orange crushed...

Why is it that 5579 got crushed, not only with an orange sign but with one unique sign that no other Ride-On bus has, and it ends up on the training track...while 5818 (which took longer to repair (or whatever they did to it...seeing as this took MUCH longer than it should have)) has nothing changed other than being nice and shiny.

I've wondered the same about the 90/92/93 not running past the Duke Ellington Br loop to the Woodley Park Metro station loop (or at least the 90 OR 92 with the other staying at the Duke Ellington Br loop).  Makes more sense to have at least either the 90 OR 92 run all the way to me.  The 96 doesn't come often enough (although I do admit I've caught it a few times at Conn/Calvert when heading to 18th Street.

Either the 90 OR 92 (not both) could continue to Woodley Park and layover (although it would be one bus at a time) on 24th St, opposite the L2 stop near the Wardman Park Marriott.

Just an idea

And where do you all propose that the 90s layover at Woodley Park?  There isn't really any suitable place to do it in my opinion, even the 98s didn't have a lot of room there.

That bus stop isn't very large.  Seeing as the ridership on the 90s isn't all that high when it reaches Adams Morgan to begin with, I'm not sure extending the route to the Metro will dramatically change anything, especially now that the circulator route runs all day and you also have the L2 operating from the Metro to Adams-Morgan.  Better to leave it the way it is IMHO.

Ima have to slap Catoe in the face for holding my babies back.  :'(

Did Catoe flood the Red River?  I knew he was powerful but damn!

Scrabble, I've known Circ to do special service "more readily" than Metrobus would because it's easier for City Council to give them money / easier for them to ask City Council for money (or the Nats or other parties for that matter) to fund extra service than it would be for WMATA to do so - therefore, I wouldn't be surprised to see some impromptu game day service.

I haven't used the N22 postgame and it stops by the wrong side of Navy Yard station for the ballpark anyway.  However, I doubt the N22 late night and weekend service was justified when the Nats are not at home.  I agree with Tristan, having the route operated by DC instead of WMATA probably allows for greater flexibility such that the route will only run when it actually needs to.

I checked out the Ox action a bit today and -- much to my bewilderment, they are using A for the run numbers.

Well it makes perfect sense, but I was anticipating a surprise.  Oh well.

Also saw 4242 on the 7A about an hour ago.

flexibility and cost are the reasons fro things like the Circ and Dash and ART.  Cost too as they are much cheaper than Metro.

Not funny, but awesome, seeing as that bus is (hopefully) out of its misery from Northern.

And yeah, I wouldn't be surprised at all if West Ox kept A for the block #, I was actually expecting that
