The purpose of the connectors shown on page 12 of the PDF I linked to is to "improve system flexibility", meaning WMATA will be able to divert trains around obstructions and maintenance projects and still be able to maintain reasonable headways.

I don't believe WMATA's intentions is to create a rainbow of new lines with never before conceived terminal pairs.

There is no way to do Shady Grove to New Carrolton as the red line does not share track with the O Line.

You all need to take a second look at the map on page 12 Future Metrorail Capacity Needs(423 KB PDF file) that I posted earlier in this thread.

WMATA wants to replace the existing A&C connector with a flying junction.
