I remember vividly waiting for the J8 in front of the Big Boy at that statue.  PG Plaza was where we went all of the time as I grew up in Carole Highlands near Riggs and Univ. Blvd.  We be-friended on operator on there, I think his name was Arnold.  Really nice guy who I remember bumping into at Harpers Ferry in the early 80's after he retired.  In the later seventies, the stops all moved to the end of the mall where G.C. Murphy's was.  I think that's a Target now....haven't been there in a few years.

Your observation about the G.C. Murphy at PG Plaza becoming a Target is correct.

To the supermarket glut in Langley, what did the Giant and the Grand Union become? When did Grand Union leave DC (and anywhere outside of New York/New Jersey/New England) in the first place? I know the Safeway's still there and the A&P was subdivided into the Aldi and a couple smaller shops.

Grand Union left Langley Pk in Late 70's & Early 80's
A&P once became a Horn & Horn, then a DUFFS buffet in the mid-late 80's/early 90's
Safeway remodeled. .  the store was once FLUSH w/ the other stores in that part of the shopping canter (remember the WESTERN AUTO store next to Safeway??)
When We were up in DC in 2006, I noticed the GIANT had left.

If you take the "WAYBACK MACHINE" and set it to the late 60's & Early 70's
KROGER SuperMarket was behind the 7-11 at Piney Branch/University Blvd
(The 7-11 wasnt even there then) and there was a crab shack at the same corner where the EXXON station is now)
ACME/Super Saver was on Piney Branch between Arliss & Flower Ave.
Co-Op supermarket was where the ShoppersFood @ EW-Hgwy & New Hampshire Ave

Back then, PLENTY of places that wanted you to spend your $$$ at.
Can't go wrong, with a classic ANYTHING!
