Today fares increases take effect for NYCTA buses and subway, MTA Bus and LIB.  They also get a bit closer to Regional Bus with LIB adopting the NYCTA/MTAB fare/transfer policy.

Local bus and subway fares increase to $2.25.  Express bus fares increase to $5.50.  New prices for 1 day fun pass is $8.25, 7-day is now $27, 14-day is now $51.50 and 30-day is now $89.  7-day pass for express bus is now $45.

Increases at other MTA agencies is coming for Brige and Tunnel tolls on July 12, and already in effect for LIRR and Metro-North since June 17.

Now with the Metrocard as the official subway currency...has it ever been considered to use distance based fare system?  Similar to DC --- It seems to me that if you're just going from South Ferry to Times Square, that it should be cheaper than going from South Ferry to Canarsie
Red Line train to Rhode Island Avenue -- Doors Closing
Blue Line train to Stadium-Armory -- Doors Closing
Orange Line train to Ballston -- Doors Closing

Next station -- Nicholson Lane -- Doors open on the left

There is no method to collect fares as one exits, and the distances covered by the NYC subway are not nearly as large as those covered on systems that charged by distance traveled such as WMATA, BART, and in London.

I don't know if it's ever been considered, but if so, I hope it never happens.  IMO, even when you consider the fare hike, travelling on NYCT (and MTAB, LIB, SIR) is one of the best mass transit bargains.  The free bus-to-bus, bus-to-subway and subway-to-bus transfers make it even better.  I love living here in the DC area, but I do miss NYC's very frequent service and convenience.
