Amtrak's 2010 revenue and ridership

 The January 2011 edition of TRAINS reported that Amtrak's revenue and ridership soared in 2010. 

"In fiscal year 2010 (ended Sept. 30, 2010), Amtrak set an all-time ridership record of 28,716,857, and earned a record $1.74 billion in revenue.  The ridership figure breaks the previous record, achieved in 2008, by a mere 450 passengers, yet in 2010 the company earned almost $9 million more in ticket revenue than 2008.  Both 2010 figures show huge gains over recession-plagued 2009.  Long-distance trains and state-supported corridor services picked up the slack for weakened Northeast Corridor demand and pricing pressure in 2010."  " . . . the biggest 2010 percentage gainers were Acela Express (up 6.6% in ridership and 7.5% in revenue),  Missouri River Runner  (14.4%/24.4%),   Vermonter  (16.5%/19.1%),  Sunset Limited  (16.4%/20.4%), and   City of New Orleans   (16.6%/15.2%).  Amtrak's large revenue gains were driven by higher coach and sleeping car fares."
