PHOTOS from the Egged Museum

Egged has a small museum in the back corner of its Holon facility (south of Tel Aviv).  The museum is open to the public Friday mornings, but they also open during the intermediate days of Sukkot and Passover.  I went during the latter holiday, back on April 1, and took many photos, which can be seen at http://www.orenstransitpage.com/otpisraelpics/eggedmuseum.htm.  However, I'll post some highlights here on DCATZ for your enjoyment.  As you'll see from my captions, many of the buses on display have connections to Israel's military history or were the targets of terrorist attacks.










Multi-purpose  Ford bus, manufactured in 1946, withdrawn after 20 years of service,  this bus was used for British military service in the 1940s and 1950s  and then used in Iraq:


"White  Super" intercity bus, manufactured in 1951, withdrawn after 25 years of  service, this bus was involved in a terrorist attack on the Rosh  Pina-Tzfat bus route, in the past the vehicle belonged to the "Natzrat"  transportation company, was in storage at Mifratz in Haifa, was  smuggled to Lebanon in 1948 but returned to Israel by the end of war,  new diesel engine and body, built by HaArgaz, were installed in the  1960s, and a new "White 140 A" was installed as well when the bus came  to the Egged Museum:

Leyland  RT intercity bus, manufactured in 1968, withdrawn after 20 years of  service, this bus was used for transporting soldiers during the 1973  Yom Kippur War and the 1983 Lebanon War:


Leyland desert touring bus, manufactured in 1965, withdrawn after 3 years of service, the body of the bus was cut and rebuilt especially for Purim carnivals and tours in Safari (Ramat Gan), in those days the bus belonged to the Beer Tuviya regional council, in 1969 Egged purchased the bus, and the drivers were accepted as a members of the Egged cooperative, this is the only bus of this kind to ever operate for Egged:







"Ambulance bus" used by Magen David Adom (the Israeli Red Cross):




Leyland RT intercity/tourist bus, manufactured in 1969, withdrawn after 30 years of service, this bus was designed for use on school and youth movement trips:



Leyland RT MK II, manufactured in 1956, withdrawn after 12 years of service, was used in the Six Day War as a combat forces delivery vehicle:


There are many Mercedes-Benz O 405 buses currently in service, so it was somewhat interesting to see they already have one in the museum:


Leyland  MK II chassis as they were delivered between the 1950s and 1970s by  boat from England, the bodies were then built and installed in Israel:


Neoplan N912, manufactured in 1985, withdrawn after 8 years of service, used by the Gat Company as a shuttle bus to transport passengers between airline terminals and their airplanes:



Fiat 320 intercity bus, manufactured in 1970, withdrawn after 10 years of service, was designed to operate on the narrow streets of East Jerusalem and in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City:


Mercedes intracity bus, manufactured in 1974, withdrawn after 20 years of service, operated on urban and suburban routes in Holon, Bat Yam, and Jerusalem:


Mercedes O 305, manufactured in 1973, withdrawn after 21 years of service, operated on urban routes in Jerusalem, note its funny side destination sign housing:





Mercedes O 305, manufactured in 1980, withdrawn after 18 years of service:


Scania intercity bus, manufactured in 1972, withdrawn after 15 years of service, this bus was involved in the Coastal Road Massacre in March 1978:


Neoplan Skyliner 122, manufactured from 1990 to 1992, withdrawn after 10 years of service, operated on the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv line but withdrawn due to maintenance issues, several were rebuilt for service on Route 99 in Jerusalem but those are also now only kept as reserves to substitute for newer MAN double decker buses:
