And Metro wants to extort riders even more.

When will Metro stop with the oddball fare increases!? Riders have had it and there has to be a breaking point where Metro goes too far. I wish the government would take Metro into recievership, I really do. MTA Maryland would do a better, saner job running Metro than the current management.

Honestly, you're probably right.  The question really becomes, has Metro gone beyond the point of no return with its current structure?

In a nutshell: Yes. Which is why I'm for its abolition and replacement with a new agency.

The NYCTA was absorbed by the MTA. The old Boston MTA was swallowed up by the MBTA. Agencies like HRT and TCAT were created by merging multiple agencies. Replacing WMATA would be a major task, but very doable.

So now you are complaining about fare increases that won't affect you if you don't use the stations in question for improvements you won't benefit from?  Give us a break already.  Do you want the system to improve, and if so, can you make a viable suggestion for where the money should come from?

Is it seriously too much to ask for you to post your letter that you submitted to the public record on the fare increase proposals and/or to let things play themselves out before you judge them so severely?

BTW, I've taken Metro 4 times this week and will take it for a fifth this evening.  Most of my trains have been driven well with smooth stops.  The trains have come on time without delay.  There have been slow zones here and there, but I'd rather they fix things up and be delayed a minute or two than face the alternative.  They had good crowd control at both Navy Yard and Gallery Place after Strasburg's debut.  My bus rides have been OK for the most part, aside from waiting 20 minutes for the 32 to show up this afternoon, but I guess some things never change.  The 32 driver welcomed everyone aboard, warned passengers to watch their step when leaving, and was courteous to everyone on board.

Also, the TCAT merger is still resulting in repercussions throughout the agency 10 years later, and TCAT is a fraction of the size of WMATA.  You sure your planned WMATA restructuring is going to go off without a hitch?

Wow, WMATA really is a mess.  They are making things up as they go along, which is really sloppy.  I understand the need to pay for things, but they look really bad right now.  Sigh... :(
My favorite buses:
1989 SEPTA AN440: 19 years in service
1989 NJT Metro Bs: 21 years in service
1990 WMATA 93/9400 Flxes: 20 years in service!
1990-92 Ride-On Orion Is: 17-18 years in service!

Tell me again I have no taste in buses...

This proposal was included in the original menu of options for fare increases.  This isn't a "new" idea.

Nickel and dimeing the people.
There's far worse than paying higher transit fares. Much worse stuff.

Depending on the much worse, I might be willing to take a much worse than to turn Metrorail into a further cash grab. Between deteriorating service and insane fare increases, I think Metro's reached its peak under the current setup.

Hosing the people who use a particular Metro station is just wrong.  We are either one system or we are not.
