I've seen this before...a long time ago (like 1-2 years ago) on the rear sign of a Flxible (I think it was 9773). It was on the Q2, and the sign said pretty much like the U2 sign said...

although the destination didn't completely fit on the rear sign. so yeah, that said, I don't think it's a new thing that WMATA is trying, it might be just a programming error. Another example of that (different, but still a rear sign programming error) was when 2801 first got the Titan sign (back before Silver Spring TC was closed), instead of the rear sign displaying the route number, it was scrolling the next stop that would be displayed on the Clever Devices (like Georgia Ave and Kennedy St for example)

They used the same limited stop programming from the 2800s on the rest of the express buses. I guess they forgot to take out the Metro Extra part. Ironically, most of the 79 Metro Extra buses now just show Express.
