June 2010 Observations

While riding home on the Metro from downtown today, I noticed that at Woodley Park, an inbound train had stopped short of the tunnel entrance and my train stopped a bit short at Friendship Heights.  Not sure either was enough that if it had been an 8 car train, the last car would have been off the platform, but it seems to me that the operators need to pull all the way up or the whole not stopping in the center is pointless.

This has happened to me a bunch of times at Silver Spring since last Winter, always for 6-car trains . I think there are a few operators who seem confident that they can stop a 6-car train at the 6-car marker (vs. the ones who get 6 and 8 mixed up even though Metro uses different typefaces/colors for those signs).

Also, 6167 (the D40LFR in the Local scheme) on the F4.

These trains weren't stopping at the 6 car marker.  They were stopping about 3-5 feet short of the 8 car marker/tunnel mouth.  IIRC, the operators only have about that much leeway in terms of stopping position on an 8 car train, so it is a bad habit to have.

Two rail observations: Metro seems to have a new policy of "isolating" cars with broken AC in extreme heat (rode a train with one and saw 2 others with dark cars). Also, another short-stopper with a 6-car train at Van Ness, stopped short  of the end of the platform by a couple feet.

This is not a new policy by any means, and a car can be isolated for other reasons than non-operative AC.

This just in: another Ride-On Champion has been spotted in Germantown, on the 98, turning onto Middlebrook Rd. I was too far away to see the number, but it definitely looked like a Champion.

You can tell that they (or at least 4343) have very recently moved as recent as probably yesterday or so, since the routeTag for 4343 still says W13, the coordinates point to Montgomery Division. As for 4345-4366, they remain at Royal for now.



In case you're wondering: yes, Royal did get more 2100s. 2132 and 2135 are now at Royal, while 2133, 2134, and 2136+ remain at Northern.

It looks like 2160 is at Bladensburg, but I'm not sure if it's there for repairs or whatever, seeing that 2161 and 2162 are still at Northern.
The same goes with 2231, which is a Western bus
