OK - I'll bite.  In regards to WMATA I have very little bad feelings about them, but they're also not without some faults.

I assume for the worst you're referring to New York City Transit (there's 6 other agencies under New York's MTA).  Now, I'll be the first to admit that NYCTA does lots of silly things and seem to waste plenty of resources.  That said, I think they actually do well for NYC residents.  IMO, it can be complicated only because it's so extensive.  Pretty much every part of NYC is withing walking distance of a subway line, bus route(s) and/or both.  Most areas are served 24/7.  On the subway all stations are served 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and late night intervals between trains is a max of 20 minutes.  The fare structure is child's play to understand and the system itself is a major bargain with free bus/subway transfers, unlimited ride daily, weekly and monthly MetroCards.  From a bus fan's perspective the bus fleet is pretty boring, but it has been 100% accessible since '95 and 100% of the fleet has been A/C equipped since the mid 80s.

In a nutshell, I think NYCT offers a good system to approximately 7.3 million passengers on any given weekeday.

I'm curious as to why you find New York's MTA (and DASH) to be among the worst transit agencies.

DASH? I've never heard anyone say we're dead worst...what's your beef?

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but you should explain why.  I consider New York's MTA to be one of the best-run large TA's in the country and DASH to be one of the best-run small agencies.

He probably got a bus with a spec of dirt on it and was told DASH buses NEVER get dirty.

The best I've been on (I have to say) is Charlottesville Transit Service. They're constantly improving and expanding service on their bus routes.

The worst, by far (and it's not all that bad service-wise, but Damn!!) is MTA Maryland...the only fleet of trains AND buses I've seen with cockroach traps on them.
It is whatever.

Best: Ride On...followed by CTA
Worst: A tossup between New Jersey Transit and Fairfax Connector

LandoverDivision

The best is of course.....WMATA!!!! Bar none!

Actually we keep roach traps on our buses too, as a preventative measure.  Everyone and their momma and their momma's crib's roaches rides the bus.

LOL. So true. Northwest Division's buses had a roach problem. A couple of operators told me about it and I did see some running around at one time. I'd carry some Raid if I was driving a roach motel.

The best for me of course is RIDE ON and the worst is a tie between THE BUS, Corroded Toe and Howies.

Wow, I'm surprised nobody said DUH BUS is the worst TA with no evening/weekend service in an area with high transit dependency.

The best...I'd say it's between Ride-On and NY MTA.  The latter is because despite being such a massive transit authority, it's relatively tourist friendly and easy to navigate with the free maps that are available.  Ride-On's always at the forefront of technology and works to make riding transit more convenient for residents in its service area.
My favorite buses:
1989 SEPTA AN440: 19 years in service
1989 NJT Metro Bs: 21 years in service
1990 WMATA 93/9400 Flxes: 20 years in service!
1990-92 Ride-On Orion Is: 17-18 years in service!

Tell me again I have no taste in buses...

As of now....

Best: Charlotte "CATS" in North Cackalacka and Montgomery County's "Ride On" in MD
Worst: It's between CTC (Disconnect-A-Ride), Howard Transit (Howie's Truck Service) and PG's The (DUH) Bus.

The WORST for me is Cheyenne Transit Project (Wyoming), the worst marketing name, bad routes, bad transfers, they use cutaways and two blueturds. They just went (Sept. 2)to a bus stop system instead of the old flagging. I think flagging is the worst idea for a transit, for people waiting for the bus they cant tell if it will be a safe stop, and for people on the bus it makes a horrible ride because of HEAVY braking.

My most favoriteand vote for BEST is Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (Aspen,CO). It runs every 30 minutes during peak seasons(summer and winter) to Glenwood Springs (40miles away)and the last bus leaves at 215am everyday 365 days a year! All the "city" routes are free and those are every 20 minutes except Cemetery Lane and the Crosstown which are every 30 minutes. Bus stops and info are well marked on the stops or shelters, and the seats are cushy. LOL

I'd say NJT (bus division) is worse, particularly in Southern NJ.  Infrequent service (less than hourly) combined with the ridiculous amount of zone fares (you never know what you are going to pay!) plus the absence of day passes is very frustrating.
