New year, new round of proposed cuts for Ride On (PDF file). On the table for a discussion on February 2nd would be the following cuts:

  • Weekday (i.e. all) service cut on Routes 3, 21, 30, 31, 33, 36, 52, 53, 81
  • Weekend service cut on Routes 14, 23, 29, 43, 45, 83, 98
  • Sunday service cut on Route 38
  • The end of Ride On providing service for the weekend L8/T2/Z2
  • Parts of routes ended: Route 7 west of Georgia Avenue, Route 22 past Elton Road, Route 32 on Woodrock, Route 43 on Fallsgrove.
  • An assortment of trip reductions with Routes 15, 17, 34, and 57 being the most notable.

Outside of the fact that Glen Echo will inevitably throw a fit about ending weekend service on the 29 (again) and how WMATA would have some role in cutting the weekend L8/T2 (I'd assume the Saturday Z2 is as good as gone), notice how many Nicholson routes are on this list. Seeing how the Championships have been MIA for 3 months and are as good as gone, I think Nicholson might be having a bus shortage and this is in part to free up resources there. Well, besides the economic crisis and that the current administration is lagging on improving transit funding.

Saturday service might be transfered to Metro for the L8, T2, and Z2 as originally proposed last fiscal year.

You are far off, Nicholson is getting the most cuts because they have always operated the least ridden routes in the system due to the size of the buses they operate. It is not because of a bus shortage.....

Well, that too, but given the knowledge on this forum most of us could tell they were barely-ridden Nicholson routes.  ;).

In fact, save for the 14 and the weekend WMATA routes, all the routes being cut are from Nicholson. Makes absolute sense rather than run services people aren't using.

They have been trying to eliminate the Ride-On#3 for as long as I can remember.

Can't go wrong, with a classic ANYTHING!

I was surprised to see the 30 and 36 on that list.  Obviously I don't have ridership data in front of me, but my guess is the rush hour service on those routes gets retained when all is said and done.

Why then was the 3 allowed to even exist then? I know GGW isn't popular here, but they have a good post on the cuts (complete with semi-simplistic "10 cent fare hike will kill any cuts" theory) which states that the 3 has a mere 8 passengers per hour.

I know Montgomery County has built a very good transit system, but would anyone really miss the 3?
