If we have to go with CNG.  The Cummins C Gas Plus is easily my favorite, especially when it's giftwrapped in a New Flyer C40LF.

Old school - Give me these any day over the new stuff.  For me it's DD 6V92TA and 8V71N.

Oops, my bad!! :-)  I forgot that you were asking about CNG.  I do like the John Deere on the WMATA New Flyers.  If nothing else, they can double as a riding lawn mower. LOL

Yes, the New Flyers and Orion VII (except the first group) have the Cummins C Gas Plus engine.  The first Orion VIIs have the DD S50G along with the 5800 series Orion Vs.  I'm not sure what engine is in 5997-5999 although I'm sure it's a Cummins engine with ZF tranny.

That's a tough one for me, because I like the L10G, especially on the RTSs, but the John Deeres on the C40LFs take off like a freakin rocket.  I give props to the DD50G, because of the "chirping" noises they make.  I would  go with the John Deere, nice mellow sound with deep voice (the O7s-wish they have more pickup) and the speed of the ones on the C40LFs.

I think the problem on the Orion VIIs is the modern Voith transmissions and their infamous "turbo lag" - the few seconds between the time the gas is hit and the time the thing starts putting out max RPMs, usually about 2-3 but sometimes up to 5 seconds...I've been on units on hills where it didn't even happen until we crested, leaving us to crawl up at a pitiful, embarrasing ~15MPH (at most).

I have actually watched a speedometer on one of these, on a hill, get to 20MPH, decide it's a good time to shift gears, watch the speedometer drop back to 10-15, only to slowly slowly slowly creep back to 20, shift, 10-15, over and over until we got to the top.

My favorite sounding is the DDS50G (when it actually sounds good, sometimes they sound like there junk).

My favorite for riding is between the L10G and the Cummins C Gas Plus.

My favorites:
The EGR Version of the Detroit Diesel Series 50G, hands down.

It's rare and has several different "screaming" variations, and is such a sweet ear-buster if the turbocharger's overblown.

Best of all, I LOOOVE that "buck" it has when it takes off, which is most noticeable on Ride On's "low" 5900's (5901-5917), and any bus with a Allison B-series transmission.


The Cummins C Gas+ is a close second. It has that pulsating sound (that "sssssss...ssssss...sssss...sssssss...ssssss"), and every little "ssssss" pushes those rpm's even higher.

It's not only with the Orions. The New Flyer C40LFRs as well. Some of them aren't turned for service on the 79 and that long 1st gear can be a pain especially when going up Wayne toward Georgia. I also take it you might be referring to the John Deere ones. The regular ones here and there can be a bit slow out of the gate. I think the REX ones were better tuned for the service since I last rode them.
