I wonder....how does WMATA do it?  They have all of these "expensive" expansions of their expensive rail network where other systems (SEPTA) have to struggle to extend commuter rail lines?

This is great news, though, as those areas surely need Metrorail service!

The story as to how this got done is some what complicated.

Project has been the works in its present form sense the late 1990s. Commercial property owners in the corridor agreed to tax themselves to pay part of the capital costs of construction. The project is being done under the Virginia Public-Private Transportation Act (PPTA). VDOT transferred the operation of the toll road to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA). Toll revenue will pay for part of the capital costs of construction. The biggest break through took place when MWAA agreed to pay the federal share for the construction of phase II. No federal dollars will be used to pay the capital construction costs of phase II. All of the above plus continues support from the area congressional delegation.

WMATA is out of the picture when it comes to the actual building of the line. All design, engineering, and contract awarding will be done by Dulles Transit Partners under the PPTA. The only roll in the project that WMATA has is to provide Dulles Transit Partners with general design specification for the design and engineering of the line and operating the line when it is completed.

I am looking forward to the opening as well, however my disappointment will only be confirmed when all is said and done.

Concrete Platforms.
Pike Seven Station in a ditch in the median of Leesburg Pike.
New look platform canopies.
Goofy looking entrance pavilion canopies.

In My opinion the worst atrocity will be the subway station at Dulles Airport. Inverted half pipe with little or no coffer detail. The Dulles Airport station will be the only station in subway in Virginia that does not the use the classic Harry Weese 22 coffer arched vault design.
