COMMUTING ON THE YELLOW LINE
Washington Post
Commuters from Alexandria and Fairfax County will be able to ride Metrorail's Yellow Line to work for the first time this morning from four new stations along the 5.2-mile leg which opened Saturday, but finding a place to leave their cars may present discouraging problems.
Cars can only park for three hours each day on the streets around the three Alexandria stations -- Braddock Road, King Street, Eisenhower Avenue -- and Alexandria police have announced that they will be enforcing that regulation today.  The stations do not have any off-street parking.
Residents of the areas around the stations can obtain a parking sticker from the police department permitting them to park on their neighborhood streets during the day.
The Huntington station in Fairfax County has a lot with 2,000 parking spaces.  Parking on the streets adjacent to the station is restricted to cars with resident stickers or visitor passes between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on weekdays.
In spite of potential parking problems, Metro officials are predicting that there will be 13,000 trips into and out of the four new stations today and every weekday.  Trains are scheduled every six minutes during rush hour and every 12 minutes during off-peak times.
During rush hour, a trip from Huntington station to the Pentagon will cost $1.20; to Farragut West, $1.65;  to Union Station, $1.70.  When it is not rush hour, the fare is a flat 75 cents.
