The United Railroad Historical Society is sponsoring the first annual
New Jersey Transportation Heritage Festival on Sept. 16. The festival will take place in the society's restoration facility at 100 Morris Ave. in Boonton from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The festival will include tours of the shop facility, and multi-media shows will be presented in a restored 1911 Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad freight house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The society has long-term plans to establish a New Jersey Railroad Museum.

There will also be an information table, exhibits, railroad memorabilia sales tables, and free newsletters about New Jersey railroads. NJ Transit will make hourly Operation Lifesaver presentations.

Among the locomotives available for inspection will be Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 electric No. 4877 built in 1939, and New Jersey Department of Transportation E8 No. 4253, built in June 1952 as Pennsylvania Railroad No. 5798A. It was the lead unit on Sept. 13, 1987 powering an excursion from Hoboken to Bayhead, N.J. and return commemorating the end of E-unit powered passenger service on NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line. Also on display will be antique trucks, fire engines, buses, and military vehicles.
