Actually a slight change to the 9600s was that 9652 had, I might say an experimental DD50 with an Allison tranny.

I say experimental because that was the only bus to have one.

Did that bus perform better than the other repowered 9600s?
My favorite buses:
1989 SEPTA AN440: 19 years in service
1989 NJT Metro Bs: 21 years in service
1990 WMATA 93/9400 Flxes: 20 years in service!
1990-92 Ride-On Orion Is: 17-18 years in service!

Tell me again I have no taste in buses...

I know this is an ancient post, but here goes:

One noteable difference between Metros A and B is the destination sign. The B series accomodated a larger electronic destination sign, while the A series accomodated a much smaller sign.

Also, Metro B's built after 1988 had a flat rear interior wall which NONE of the A's had.

Last thing to note. The A series was built untill around late 1986. After that untill 1992 was the B series.

Here's my personal observations on the above: I own a Metro that came from TTA in Huntington, WV (built 2/90), and it still bears the slightly angled rear interior wall, a la the early Metro and Grumman 870.  However, at the CC&T we have an ex-GRTC Metro (built 8/90), and it has the flat rear wall you mentioned.  Also, we have a 1987 Metro at CC&T (Blacksburg Transit no. 2616), which has the same size destination sign as the 1986 WMATA units shown in this post.  BT's Metros were built 6/86 (Nos. 2601-2603, 2611-2613) and 1/87 (2604-2606, 2614-2616).  From what I recall, there were no visual differences between each group of buses.
Once all the goats are rounded up, the German tourists are extradited, and the syrup trucks are returned, you'll have to admit that you never saw that one coming.
