The DCDOT traffic cameras are showing fire and rescue equipment gathered around the K Street entrance. So it looks like the derailment happen south of the station.

It never ends.  So what do you assume the affect on ridership will be???

I think it might drive some people to the L buses instead and will even create more rider rage towards Metro.

Why am I the only one who has an odd feeling that stuff's going to go down whenever the new GM comes in? I can't see Metro functioning without drastic changes for much longer given how all its chickens seem to be coming home to roost at the worst times.

I personally see in the WMATA future,

An increase of Suburb 2 Downtown Expoess buses
Federal Oversight of the Day 2 day METRO operations
A FEDERAL MANAGER on the WMATA board
2-3 years before a permanent METRO head (Catoe replacement) is named & in place
Construction of the Dulles/Tysons extension being halted!!
Can't go wrong, with a classic ANYTHING!

Well they can't blame this on the Rohr cars but someone has some splaining to do.

A Metro official said Friday's derailment on the Red Line occurred when equipment on the tracks,  known as a derailer,  purposely derailed the Shady Grove-bound train, which was on a side track, as a safety measure to prevent it from running a red light and potentially causing a collision.

It seems to be stupid things that are jamming Metro up

If MWAA is bankrolling the next phase of Silver Line construction, would they want to bail out or would a third party that currently doesn't exist tell them to wait until Metro's back on their feet? As much as Metro is in disarray, I can't see them totally walking away from Dulles.

I can see a lot more Federal involvement though I think it might be a little less than 2-3 years for a permanent Catoe replacement to come on board. I've seen cases where it's taken that long to find a replacement for a key management position and it gets to the point that you draft the interim for some stability.

Suburb-to-downtown express buses are a good idea to be honest. In fact, outside of the Wilson Blvd. corridor, The 5A corridor, and Silver Spring, what outside-the-District areas really have good bus service into downtown? I can't think of any.

I think some bus service along the Wilson Bridge will resume. With National Harbor open and the "old" NH1 being restored, it's too easy to do an NH2 with a King St-National Harbor-Branch Ave (or Suitland) routing to keep the tourists happy.
