I agree -- what a tragedy --- as a season ticket holder, I am honored to have been able to see him live in action --- what an arm - b'leve in Steve

I have to wonder, with Smithsonian open, have they eliminated the security check-points?  I found that to be a bit surprising ... plus, I guess after the inauguration, the powers that be realized that routing didn't need to be rerouted to handle the masses

GREAT pictures ... I'm assuming some of those shots were from the old and new South Ferry station?

Remember when...? / Happy Birthday Blue Line
July 01, 2009, 10:49:17 PM
On this day in 1977, the Metro system introduced the second of its five color lines ... The Blue Line opened between National Airport and Stadium-Armory --- Making Metro Center a true transfer station and introducing all of us to Farecard Machines - and the state of Virginia -- All of the cars in use were the 1000 Series Rohr Cars using the original Roll Signs (as seen above) --- The next segment to open wasn't until February 1978 -- and at that time, Maryland finally had a station to call its own....

Now with the Metrocard as the official subway currency...has it ever been considered to use distance based fare system?  Similar to DC --- It seems to me that if you're just going from South Ferry to Times Square, that it should be cheaper than going from South Ferry to Canarsie

I've alwys had a certain thing for Clyde's -- especially the one in Columbia on the lakefront ... as for the chains, we do have an UNO's out near Deep Creek Lake that's pretty good, other than that, we have a Ruby Tuesdays and an Applebees and a TON of Chinese buffets --- butas far as local restaurants go, When Pigs Fly in Cumberland is really good and The Hen House between Grantsville and Frostburg is really good --- best crabs this side of Frederck

If they pull the Rohrs, I just realized that that would make my roll-sign all the more valuable.  I'd hate to see those cars go ... but, cha ching

Remember when...? / Re: First Metro Black Black

I think it was a little different ..... when the front wheels went to the other track, the motorman realized that that was wrong, but before he could back up, the switch sprang back into straight mode, so when he backed up, the front of the train didn't go back onto the switch, it remained on the wrong track with the back of the car remaining on the proper track, thereby, splitting the car in two by the center retaining wall ... somewhere at home, I have the original articles from the post when the accident happened, I'll have to look.  It WAS an Orange Line train headed, I believe, towards New Carrollton (this was all on the switch under the National Mall between Federal Triangle and Smithsonian)

Until Monday ... the Rohrs were just the oldest cars, but still in fine working order ... now, thanks to the train at fault being all Rohr's --- that tune appears to have changed to the point that feds may be forced to replace them along with other older rolling stock in other cities sooner rather than later ... what are your thoughts?

It's interesting what you said about the first two cars being empty -- that's what freaks me about about the whole thing ... in all likelihood -- in a situation like that, railfans are always in the front or back cars -- and in my case, that includes my children.

I'm morbidly amused that my pic is one of a roll sign from a Rohr Car .... I hate to lose another one.

Wasn't there also an extension south of Huntington down to Hybla Valley -- I don't have it in front of me so -- not sure
