Hmm would they? Do they even have a contract with Gillig anymore?
Title: Re: WMATA Orders Gillig Advantages?
Post by: Annex4421 on September 09, 2009, 11:09:13 PM
Maybe. Do you think WMATA would get Gillig Advantages clean-disels or hybrids?
Title: Re: WMATA Orders Gillig Advantages?
Post by: LandoverDivision on September 09, 2009, 11:10:36 PM
Prolly Hybrids since they said hybrids can save them millions of gas a year.

Hmmm they would look good in the new paint, what division do you think would take them?

Hmm Landover and maybe West Ox.

Hmmm I think Montgomery and Maybe Northern

Montgomery (since its becoming Gillig country with the ones Ride-On has) and probably West Ox.

Hypothetical Gillig Advantages and Northern? I'd love to see the ride quality one year in on those!

My guess would be Montgomery, West Ox, and maybe Landover. Possibly, possibly Royal if some had suburban seating.

Post by: WES on September 10, 2009, 02:36:36 PM
If Gillig Advantages were bought, housed at Northern and even survives a year, with Northern's wear and tear on buses, Gilllig would have a new found respect in terms of major cities considering ordering them.
Title: Re: WMATA Orders Gillig Advantages?
Post by: Tritransit Area on September 10, 2009, 04:25:32 PM
I think the Advantages would have a chance.  Big R's (Ride On) low floor Gilligs (at least the ones in the older scheme) were quite solid when I rode them.
Title: Re: WMATA Orders Gillig Advantages?
Post by: Annex4421 on September 10, 2009, 05:27:08 PM
Well Northern's buses do look terrible, But I was considering the fact that when northern gets rebuilt, and I forgot about West Ox the Gilligs would look good out there, and at Landover. But for some reason I fell Montgomery won't take them because Ride-On would probably feel wmata is copying them thats why I feel they should go to a DC Facility

They're not going to decide what garage to base them out of because of what other properties are running them.  They also won't get buses that look 'neat' out of one garage or the other.

It would be interesting to see them, but as Wes said, they seem to be locked in with New Flyer for now.
Title: Re: WMATA Orders Gillig Advantages?
Post by: Annex4421 on September 11, 2009, 07:47:56 AM
Well with that said perhaps we'll see some C42LFA's in the near future?
Title: Re: WMATA Orders Gillig Advantages?
Post by: Tritransit Area on September 11, 2009, 11:01:10 PM
Ride On already copied WMATA by getting 40 foot Orion Vs, then WMATA repowered their Orion Vs (9600s) to have DD50s and Voiths. :)

I could see a Gillig BRT in the new WMATA scheme, but not a standard advantage.  About the C42LFAs, do you guys really need more CNG buses?  Is West Ox CNG capable?  Actually, isn't Southeastern supposed to be CNG capable?
Title: Re: WMATA Orders Gillig Advantages?
Post by: Annex4421 on September 11, 2009, 11:17:37 PM
Yeah Southeasten is supposed to be CNG don't know about West Ox. As for Gillig BRT's I don't know about that I'd prefer original Gillig's. Wouldn't a C42LFA look like a DE42LFA ?

Won't the get C40LFAs? I wonder if they're going to get C60LFAs? Or go Long beach Transit on us and get GE40LFAs?

Oren, are you on the "Gillig sucks bandwagon" from Buschat or have you not ridden any of there newer products as of late? I personally think Gillig is one of 2 manufacturers that make a solid product right now. They did have there bad times in the mid 90's but I think they have come a long way since then.

The newest Gilligs that I rode extensively were the TCAT hybrids that were part of the NYS Consortium order.  I was not impressed with them, and while Ithaca is no sprawling metropolis, the upstate New York weather takes a big toll on those streets.  The Gilligs did not provide a comfortable ride in my opinion, I generally preferred getting a New Flyer, Nova LFS, or even an Orion I (and you all know what I generally think of those buses) over a Gillig.  Also, according to my contacts at TCAT, they've had maintenance issues with them and the drivers aren't huge fans of them either.

If you think about it RIDE ON is probably as good of a test you got other than Pittsburgh.  Some of the routes RIDE ON runs see crush loads on a daily basis and granted Montgomery's Road isn't as bad as say a Baltimore, or New York City, but when you have even New Flyers having their problems on Baltimore streets, Gillig isn't looking too of a manufacturer as it used to be.

WMATA has had a policy of forgive and forget, remember WMATA had a bad relationship with Neoplan because the 40 footers were crap, but years later, WMATA bought more Neoplans.  WMATA has had a bad relationship with Gillig also, but that doesn't mean that WMATA will never go back to Gillig for an order.

Gillig has found a good niche in only taking orders from smaller T/As, it has worked well for them, and I don't think they would want to change that to prove themselves they can make a bus sturdy enough to handle large city streets.  Gillig likes things the way they are it seems.

I'm not sure why everyone has such a negative view of Gillig, they're one of the only two manufacturers who are still producing quality buses today. Yes, they may have taken a huge dip in the mid-1990s, but their products have been VERY well built in the recent years. Not only are they assembled well, but they are VERY ergonomical and functional as transit buses; switches well positioned, FAST and RELIABLE doors, powerful powertrains, etc.

And for those who don't believe Gilligs will hold up in DC streets, we operate Gilligs in a podunk town in the midwest where you will find streets that are unmaintained concrete slabs that are in WORSE condition than anything you will find anywhere in the DC area and they hold up perfectly fine here

The Gillig Low Floor significantly improved Gillig's image.  I'll agree with Oren that they aren't as smooth riding as, let's say, a New Flyer, but boy are they solid.  PG's newest Phantoms are outstanding as well.

In my opinion i think Gilligs are for small TA like THEBUS and Shuttle UM and maybe Ride-on? Just saying its like NYCTA getting them and i just dont think Gilligs are strong enough for some DC streets.

If WMATA does somehow get Gilligs, then the Gillig Advantage BRT is the bus to get. I was thinking the too Jereme, but hey you never know what happens. Look at PAT. They got Advantages and Phantoms.
