Title: As Seen On
Post by: WES on August 09, 2009, 08:12:57 PM
Well this really couldn't go in the DC Observations since it is not really a DC bus sighting, so I created this little topic of buses that are seen in the areas, that they are passing through to get either to their respective T/A or going to a expo.

Well since I was the genius who thought this thing up I will start:

Saw NJT 5331 heading northbound in a traffic jam on I-495 by Central Avenue, while I was heading southbound.

Yeah, I saw 5300 and 5303 N/B on I-95 in B-More about 5 weeks ago.  You can expect plenty of sightings over the next couple years as NJTransit is getting 1145 of these NABIs.  It looks like they have about 150 of them, give or take a few.

Good idea Wes.

To revive this topic, today on the Baltimore Beltway saw two "ACE" buses on two seperate flatbeds sitting along the shoulder.  The looked to be NABI artics.  Since I forgot who "ACE" is and who runs it (though I have a hunch), who does?

They maybe the Las Vegas Wright Streetcars that are for the ACE service...

heh...the only out-of-the-area sighting I ever saw was a CUE bus at the National Mall. From what I heard a couple of years ago, South Florida's BCT had possession of WMATA's 6045 (silverbrid) before coming into service here.

Not sure if this is a "Relic" or an "As Seen On", but here's an ex-DASH Orion I in NYC.

Yes, those are our ACE Wright Vehicles.  Some of them had to be shipped to Baltimore then trucked out here, while others were shipped to San Diego and trucked out here.  It had something to do with the Buy America thing where it spread the business to two ports.

Cool that you saw those.  We put a bunch into service this Sunday...can't wait!

I remember seeing also two of Vegas's first order of double deckers heading towards New York Avenue via South Dakota Avenue a few years ago.  Amazing what you see in these parts.

I remember2 years ago in Baltimore seeing a white 40ft Orion VII NG.

That's weird that the double decker was roaming around in DC.  Maybe they were showing it off to the politicians.  When they were first delivered a few years ago, I'm not kidding when I say this, but one was destroyed by a missle on the ship it was being carried on.

I forgot to mention this but this past Sunday saw two white NJT NABIs heading north on MD 495.  I am guessing these might be future "GO" buses.

Well  to revive the topic yet again, though this will happen every now and again, spotted NJT 5711 heading northbound on I95/495 near Central Avenue.

Saw a Nashville MTA Gillig Low Floor in the tour bus parking lot of Main Street Station Casino in downtown LV the other day.  I saw an unidentified Gillig there one other time but, just like with the Nashville one, I was coming off the freeway so it came up so suddenly didn't have a chance to really get a good look at it.

NJT 5765 seen stuck in traffic heading towards the Wilson Bridge yesterday around the midday.

Bus seen in LV was probably headed to the property, sometime they stop by other properties to show them off and possibly drum up some future orders. I see alot of new NF's and MCI's rollin' past my way on I-94. The latest being Miami-Dade "TIC" and CT on a snowy day, photos on my fb page.

I think they were just passing through and needed an overnight stay.  We haven't had any buses pop by for a visit since  Nova test bus came through a couple of years ago.  I'd love for us to try out a Gillig, but they're pretty happy with New Flyer.

Yesterday, while heading to a wedding saw two all white Gillig Advantages heading up 495, north of D'Arcy Road.  The looked to be 35 feet long, older Advantages but don't know to which T/A the belonged to.

I love driving along I-40 since there are always Gillig's being delivered.  On our way to and from Albuquerque, I saw Gilligs being delivered to East Carolina State University and Rutgers University. Also saw a plain red one, but since it didn't have a name on it, not sure where it's going.  Maybe York?  A green a blue one rolled by as well.  Then coming back from ABQ today saw an Orion VII heading westbound.  It was yellow from the windows down with purple on the top half.  I couldn't see any names on it either so I have no idea where it was headed.

Orion VII may be one of those for King County (Seattle) Metro.  Here's a pic of one of their NFI D40LFs the same colors.

Ahh, yes, that was the same color I saw.  I wonder why they were taking the southern route and then having to head all the way up to Seattle that way?  I would have thought they would have taken I-70.  I guess they were coming from somewhere in the south.

Thanks for that picture!  It's cool watching the buses getting delivered.  The green and blue one I saw almost looked like Ride-On colors, but not sure if they're expecting anything new.

Agreed!  It is strange for them to be using I-40 given that Seattle is among the top northern-most cities in the lower 48.  I seem to vaguely recall some mention of an Orion facility somewhere in NC.  I think some nearly complete Orion buses went there for quality control/completion???  If I'm correct, then it makes sense for them to use I-40 to any point out west.

Also, Seattle Metro uses at least least 3 versions of that paint scheme.  This was the case when we visited Seattle in June 2006.

Yes some of Ride On's Orion VII CNG's did go to the ex-Thomas plant in North Carolina for "finishing touches".

That bus is still probably making its way up there!!

I may actually be going to Seattle for a couple of days in August for an APTA Multimodal Operations Planning workshop.  It's going to be quick though...up on the Monday that the conference begins and coming home Wednesday.  I won't even really have time to do any riding.  Based on the schedule of courses, the days are packed and there are events in the evening too.  In fact, I'm going to be so pressed for time in the AM getting there that I'll have to cab it because to take the light rail and a bus to where the event is would take well over an hour vs. 20 minutes in a taxi.  Going home I would take a late enough flight that I'd have time to do transit.

It just depends on what the final cost of everything will be if my agency can swing it.

I'm wondering if they were taking I-40 to 93, then cut up to I-15 North through Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, then I-80 to the west?  If not, they'll be taking 40 all the way out and then I guess somehow hook up with I-5.  What a trip!!  That bus will  have 5,000 miles on it before it even goes into service!

Not sure if this is a "Relic" or an "As Seen On", but here's an ex-DASH Orion I in NYC.

That's awesome.  Looks like one of DASH's 1991 units.  It's great to see yet another one preserved in service.  I wonder which no. that one is?

Meanwhile, here is ex-DASH no. 28, seen in Lynchburg, VA during one of our CC&T excursions.  Enjoy!
