Title: Posts Getting Deleted
Post by: LandoverDivision on June 08, 2009, 05:01:26 PM
I've noticed some of our posts keep getting deleted for no apparent reason. There is no fighting in most of them it's just regular posts that get deleted by some of the managers on here. Why is this?

DE42LFA, I'm not trying to call you out on this but I'm just trying to address the situation because now two people are complaining.  Anyway, these are some of your most recent posts that were deleted:

"ANOTHER FUCKING DELETED POST!!! WAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOUR AZZ? THIS LIKE THE 100TH TIME!!!!!"

"I hope nobody deletes my post above  ::)."

"Who ever this is ( i know who it is) is just wanting me to get banned or something so screw you "

Going back to May:

"Who keeps on deleting my post. Guess some people are just hating."

"LOLI just remerbed that after i posted it. I just didnt have time to go back a correct it."

"I couldve sworn i saw a Flx-D on it the other day. I donkt know if it was in service though. The B30 really need new buses BADLY. "

All this was in Observations threads.  This is where we report what we see. when and where.

I don't want this place to be cut and dry and boring and dull and whatever else, but...well here's one reason among many why we're kind of strict: I know that, back when I tried to visit every day, when I saw a new post icon, I'd click in that thread only to find "lol" or "okay" or something else that isn't relevant to the discussion, which wastes my time.  This isn't a chat room, so some of the customary responses to comments, benign as they might be, are not really appropriate here.  It would be like someone leaving you a message about something funny, then you call them back and leave another message saying that you thought it was funny -- imagine how irritated they might be if they went through the trouble of checking their voicemail only to hear "that's funny" and nothing else, I know I'd be irritated.

Saving everyone from that irritation is worth the cost of one deleted post.

Another reason some posts get deleted is for mere housekeeping, like in this example:

Landoverdivision:

"Uhh the 83 and the 86 how about? "

This was deleted just because the question and your answer didn't need to be there anymore, since the issue was resolved and the question was asked only because the poster forgot the answer, not because it was something obscure or really informative...imagine someone asking "which rail line goes to Cheverly?" Answer: Orange.  Reply: Oh yea, that's right. -- there's no need to keep that discussion on the board.  It's harmless, but it's also clutter, so we nix it just to clean up and keep the board from getting bogged down with "junk" posts.

Another example of "junk", DE40LFA, is that thread with the paintings of buses.  In and of itself, it isn't a bad thing, but you posted them, then said you were gonna put better ones up.  So what's the point of keeping the old ones?  Housekeeping only, no offense at all intended.

It looks like an entire discussion of new buses on the B30 was removed -- this is topic drift, and we don't like it.  Again, the point of Observations is to report Observations, not really to discuss things at length.  You're free to start a new topic on the subject, just don't hijack an existing thread.

THE POINT IS

If you feel like a post was deleted unfairly, let me or another moderator, any moderator, know as soon as you think this is the case.  VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE.  Don't blast the board with "I hope this doesn't get deleted" because it WILL be deleted.  I am not going to dig all the way through the recycle bin for posts that may or may not be there, especially when I have no idea what the post is...to say "my posts keep getting deleted" doesn't tell us anything...but if you can tell us when and in what thread you posted something that was deleted, maybe we can do something about it.

Well you just posted the worst of the worst post i made and i realized after i posted those things i should have never said anything like LOL anymore. and and when i had a hard time thinking whether to post the painted buses thread. But i wasn't completely ready for that post to be posted so i deleted it just not to look stupid. I wanted just made some draft on. I knew my post "i hope this wont get deleted" was going to get deleted. I posted it so the mods will know that im taking this seriously and not letting go. Besides other members of this board have been complaining about deleted post. Not just us 2.

I posted the most recent ones I could find with a relatively cursory look through the Recycle Bin...these were from the top 5 most recent threads that are there.  I addressed you two (landoverdivision and DE40LFA), and I'm not trying to be offensive or anything, because you are the two who came forward; the same goes for everyone though.  We will review any decision made if you can give us specific details.

There's not too much anyone can do to say whether a post deletion was fair or not unless we can actually find the post in question, so we need to be adults about this, and we cannot harp on past grievances.  If you feel like your post was unfairly deleted, you need to give us an indication of when that post was made and in what thread, because there are multiple moderators here and we are all working to keep the board clean -- if Joe Schmoe deletes some posts from his own judgment (and I trust all the moderators judgment), John Doe won't know anything about it if you just say "my post got deleted".

Now I'm not against members speaking out when they feel like they've been treated unfairly, and I encourage you and everyone else to continue doing so, but I feel like you're nitpicking me when I'm trying to be fair, diplomatic, and accomodating.  Not a good idea, forcing me to waste the limited time I have addressing this crap instead of working on the site.  In fact, it's pretty selfish to all the people who want to see this site become something bigger.  I've told you what the policy is and what to do about it, so let's work with that and move on.

You haven't given me any valuable information I can use to find the posts you're complaining about (there are 353 deleted posts, I'm not going through all of them), and I'm not devoting any more time that I don't have to this issue until you do so.  Like I said, it'll probably not work for posts that were already deleted (unless you remember the details), but it will help the problem in the future.

If you feel that any of this is unfair or unreasonable and would rather have me dig through the whole recycle bin to find your posts when I don't even know what I'm looking for, let me know and I will do that.  It will stifle development of this site even more, but I will do that.
