More roadblocks ahead for the Dulles rail project

WASHINGTON - Construction on the Dulles rail extension is being delayed for at least a year, and the cost of the project will be going up, officials say.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority announced their decision on Wednesday, as they try to meet all of the Federal Transit Administration-mandated specifications for the project.
Construction will not begin until March of 2009, at the earliest. The project was supposed to begin in February of 2008.
The latest setback means the 11-mile first phase of the project will not be completed until 2013. The delay in construction will also add $54 million to the project's cost, putting the price tag at $1.63 billion.
The FTA has approved moving the project to the final design stage, but only if the authority modifies some of the financing.
A statement from the authority's board members indicates they will comply with the FTA's request.
The first phase of the project will take Metro out to Wiehle Avenue. The second phase of the project -- extending Metro to Loudoun County -- is still in the planning stages.

Again? They might as well not build the damn thing. I thought everything was in order when they approved the funding for the project.
