Title: We invade NYC
Post by: WayneNYC on December 16, 2008, 12:48:54 PM
So myself, btconet and Rideonrulez invade my hometown this past weekend.

Those guys went to NYC on Saturday, but I wasn't able to make it there until Sunday.  The mode of transportation was Amtrak.  Mine differed a bit in that I rode to NYC on Boltbus since all of the Amtrak trips for Sunday were over $100 when I booked my travel.  Boltbus was just $24 for a one hour longer trip.  Plus I get to experience Boltbus.  My day started with me leaving my house at 7:40 AM.  Rode Ride On #5951 on the 61 to Shady Grove station.  Once at the station I was expecting a train of Rohr cars or maybe some mixed consist train.  To my suprise an 8-car train with all 4000 series Breda cars rolled in.

At Metro Center Boltbus' Prevost X3-45 #0824 showed up for the 9:30 AM trip to NYC.

The driver was a real pro and he really ran than bus up the road.  I enjoyed every bit of it and I had the first seat for the perfect view.  Arrived in NYC ontime and the guys met my bus.

We rode NYCTA's Nostalgia train which is made up of 6 R1 through R9 cars.  For those who don't know NYTCA started this last year.  During the holiday season they operate one of their historical trains on Sunday from lower manhattan, 2nd Ave station to Queens Plaza.  The train operates between 10 AM and 5 PM.  This was awesome and I think everyone enjoyed the ride.  It bought back very fond memories for me as I remember riding these cars until they were retired in 1977.

The TA also operates a few of the vintage new look buses.  The buses run on several Manhattan routes assigned to MJ Quill depot.  They operate during rush hour as extras.  I heard that two buses made it out yesterday, but we saw just one of them which was #2151.  2151 is a 1962 GMC TDH-5301.

The other bus was 1973 Flxible 53102-6-1 #7340.  We rode this bus last year, but unfortunately we didn't see it yesterday.

Here's a pic of #7340 from last year.

In between this we rode plenty of buses in Manhattan and 1 in Brooklyn.  We also visited Coney Island and got pics in various locations incuding downtown Newark, NJ.

We rode plenty of trains too including NJT commuter train and PATH to/from Manhattan.

Had a great time and we caught the Amtrak's 193 regional train back hom from NYP.  The guys got off in B-more and I continued on to New Carrollton where I met the wife and off to dinner we went.

Looking forward to the next trip.

Here's some of the bus pics I got.

Nice pics Wayne. Did you ever catch MegaBus to NYC? Damn, I haven't visited the Big Apple since 2000. I want to go back up there so badly.

Thanks a bunch.  I didn't see the LI Bus NG as I, myself didn't go to Flushing or southeastern part of Queens.  As far as I know, LIB has only the one pilot Orion VING #1700 which is CNG powered.

Those are some really great shots!

I have yet to ride around on the vintage buses the MTA has running around this year, but after this week I'm on vacation so I'll be definately in and out of NYC often.
