I was wondering when new changes were going to take effect. Looks like I'll have to update my Google Earth bus map of DC.

They always take place at the same times: end of June, September, and December

The 43 is an interesting idea, I'm sure it will be popular with many people.  I also think it makes sense to combine the various 60s since they are interlining all the time anyway.

Wow the M5 didn't last very long...and it brings me back to see "34" on the destination sign again.

A couple of questions though, doesn't the 15 line already go through Tysons Corner? and if so, what's the point of the 15M?

Also, will the 63 go all the way from Takoma to Federal Triangle via where the 62 and 68 go or is it different? I didn't really understand it.

Yeah, plus the 42 can get VERY crowded during rush hour, I've been there before. The 43 does seem like a good idea.

I always had a proposed a 43 as a limited bus NYC style, not just skipping DuPont Circle, but it could fit the bill.

If the M5 is going to be the 34, the M6 might as well become the 38.  They also should put out combined timetables for the 31/32/36/37 in Northwest and the 32/34/36/39/M6 in Southeast.

I guess the 15M provides additional service from Tysons to GMU - the current 15s start at Rosslyn.

That is a good idea, but that would use alot of paper to get all of those routes combined into one schedule. Even with the weekday and weekend schedule separation, it'd still seem like alot.

There is already a 38...the 38B. I know it's not one of The 30s but I know WMATA wouldn't do that. Other than that, there's the 30, 33, and 35.

There is also a 38 running from Wheaton to Montgomery Mall and a 34 running from Friendship Heights to Aspen Hill.  But seriously, the 38B and M6 don't overlap nor do they even come close to doing so, it wouldn't really be a problem.

Are you serious?  Saving paper is the reason you don't think this is the best idea?  Many people would probably take a combined NW 30s schedule instead of getting separate schedules for the 31, 32, 36, and 37 if a combo schedule existed, and that sounds like potential savings to me.

Tell Metro to make one.

Also, I'd renumber the M6 to 33. Having it as 38 would confuse it with the 38B. If they made it 38A, then it wouldn't fit with the current numbering system.

Also, what does Ride On 38 and 34 have to do with any of this?

Also, what does Ride On 38 and 34 have to do with any of this?

Why would a 38 running between Fairfax Village and Potomac Avenue potentially be confused with a 38B running between Farragut Square and Ballston?  By your logic (and George's), 38 is a bad number to use because it is used on another WMATA route miles away from the one its use is being proposed for.  I think the potential for confusion between this 38 and Ride On 38 is about as likely as confusion between this 38 and the 38B.  (On an aside, Ride On 34 and WMATA 34 had bus stops about 100 feet away from each other for a few months earlier this year, and no one complained that was confusing, I think the 38s will be OK.)

The reason 38 is a more suitable number than 33 in my opinion is with the exception of the 37, which gets its number for historical reasons, the low numbers are on the Wisconsin Avenue side, the high numbers are on the Pennsylvannia Avenue side, and the middle numbers run the entire route.  A more appropriate number for the 37 would be the 33, which in turn would free up 37 to be used for something else.  However, if you read Dr. Gridlock's blog when these changes were being formulated, you would see people remember what the 37 was, so it makes sense to reuse the number (ironically, the current N3 is actually the old N1, not the old N3).  Calling the M5 the 34 also has history, since it operates along the 34's old route.  Using 30 or 35 within 12 months of discontinuing those routes, unless they are being brought back, would be a bad idea and very confusing.

Post by: NewFlyer9736BCT on December 14, 2008, 01:24:40 PM
That makes sense...but
1. Ride-On and WMATA are different TAs so it's not a big issue about having 2 route 34s (and now that "confusion" is gone since the 34 has been eliminated, you won't be hearing about any complaints anymore.)
But potentially renumbering the M6 to 38, there's already a 38B in Farragut Square, and that's a route by the same TA, and not that it matters to me but WMATA will most likely avoid that.
2. Seeing as the 32 runs through the whole line and the new 34 will be on the SE side of the 30s, it's already not in order from what you said about the lower, middle, and upper 30s.

It looks like the M6 runs straight through Pennsylvania Ave unlike the other 30s, so it would make sense to number it 30, 33, or 35. That's just what I think.

Additionally, the M6 is a full time, base route, so it should get an even number.  The only unused even number available is the 38.

There is already duplication between various letter and number combinations in the WMATA system.  There are J routes going all over the place, multiple sets of C routes, a variety of different B routes (is B30 too close to 38B for your liking?), several sets of H routes, and I could go on with more.  There isn't any overlap between the M6/38 and the 38B.  It is over 3 miles as the crow flies from Farragut Square to Potomac Avenue.  I think your fears of confusion are unfounded.

Again, not that I care if it's numbered the 38, I just thought that the theory was that because there's a 38B, WMATA won't consider a 38 on the 30 line. I never said I cared, if I worked for WMATA, I would actually consider renumbering it the 30, 33, 35, or 38. But, like you said, bringing the 30 and 35 back within 12 months would confuse some people, especially in SE where the 30s split up.

And no, the B30 is way different than 38B, who would ever get those 2 confused.

For some reason Ken has yet to explain, he thinks there would be confusion between the 38 and 38B.  Perhaps he will reply to these posts and explain himself.

George, you said yourself that "There is already a 38...the 38B."  I don't know where you came up with the theory that WMATA wouldn't consider giving it that number for that reason, maybe they won't.  This isn't like calling a bus running along M Street the 38, which if that was being suggested, then I would agree that it would be very confusing.  However, in this case, the routes are miles apart, so I don't think there would be a problem.

The 89M stands for the Muirkirk branch. It is kinda outside of the numbering system.

S80 is the Springfield TAGS line from Franconia to Springfield Mall and Metro Park.

The 30 and B30 have nothing to do with each other. The B30 is just following the WM&A numbering scheme for the PG routes.

The Y31 was created in March as a tripper from Yorktown High School in Arlington to Washington Blvd. & Quincy (hence the Y). No connection with the 31 whatsoever.

Well all garages are done picking there a lot of changes that will take place with this pick we think its going to be really great. We have new routes such as 34,43,63,15M.

34-Naylor Rd.-Archives
43-Farrgut Sq.-Mt.Pleasent
63-TAKOMA- Federal Triangle
15M-George Mason University-Tysons Corner

Who wants to place bets on how long before the 15M becomes a FFX Connector route?  It's odd that with this regional routing that WMATA does that they choose to do an intra-county run.  When West Ox opens up I wouldn't be surprised if they take that over while they're taking over the Chantily and Centreville routes.

The 15M and 15K times at Tysons seem a bit close together. I took a look at the upcoming schedules and most of the 15Ks coming to Tysons and 15Ms leaving Tysons are about 2-3 minutes apart. I'm just wondering how this split will work.
Title: Re: Metro new routes and changes
Post by: OrionFlyer on December 19, 2008, 09:38:25 PM
The fact that the 15M will run only during rush hour wasn't specified.

Quote from the wmata site:

"Effective Dec. 28, A NEW 15M bus will serve that portion of the current 15K and 15L route between George Mason University and Tysons Corner. Buses will run weekdays, approximately every 25 to 40 minutes."

The part that says, "will run weekdays, approximately every 25 to 40 minutes", will lead somebody to think that this bus will run all day. I thought this bus was gong to run all day until I saw the schedule.

So whats the point of this route, again?
Title: Re: Metro new routes and changes

The 15K and L run during rush as well. The M carries people from Geo Mason to Tysons where I guess they can get the 15K to Rosslyn. The 15K takes people from Tysons Corner and Langley out to Rosslyn Station. I like the 15 line because its the fastest thing to Tysons and goes elsewhere through some interesting places.

It looks as though in the "flow" direction (towards Rosslyn AM and from Rosslyn PM), the 15M and 15K/L interline at Tyson's, as nearly all leave either at or a few minutes after the other arrives.

The same usually applies for the reverse commuters, but in the height of the peak, there are a pair of trips that distinctly just miss the connection at Tyson's.  Hopefully there are no ride-through riders on the current trips inconvenienced by this.  My guess is the route was split to allow interlining opportunities at Tysons that might reduce deadheading. As it stands now, the 15 does seems like a potentially deadhead heavy route in which buses may spend a lot of time out of service.

Actually the "M" stands for midday.  This route was created before the days of the 13M and 14M.  WMATA had run out of 80 route numbers and created the 89M to distinguish from the rush hour 89.
