Title: This May Come As A Shock To Some
Post by: WES on July 16, 2008, 12:39:00 AM
Some may already know and some may not, but believe it or not, The Bus is actually going to start putting in Not-So-SMART TRIP fareboxes in their bus fleet.  After they train the drivers on how SMART TRIP works, then they will train their money collecting staff on how to properly use a crowbar and not mess up the farebox.

The Bus buys a bunch of Gilligs and all of a sudden they think they're the ish.

What about this makes me wonder if they're even going to have them working. With half a raggedy fleet, they be broken within a week. Besides, I think they should have focused more on improving the service than getting new stuff. Running new buses on an already disappointing service. Come on Veolia and PG.

I'd be for improving the service too, however putting in SmarTrip might be key in order to eventually improve the service given how DUH BUS's non-usage sticks out like a sore thumb. We all know PG is lazy, but what if SmarTrip usage leads to a ridership bump that leads to increased service?

I don't think SmartTrip would lead toward that with DUH BUS. Most people want service improvements such as longer service times, weekend service (if ever), and safer buses. Thinking back to the FOX 5 report about the raggedy buses and such might have made people wary about avoiding to take their services. All of matter of if I'm gonna make it from point A to point B in one piece.

However, couldn't that report have led to the retirement of many of the ODV's and the arrival of the Gilligs?

PG still should take SmarTrip just because they stick out like a sore thumb. If I had a dollar for every off-campus UMD student who would think of taking them if they took SmarTrip, added by that of every blog poster in PG who'd take it if they took SmarTrip, I'd be rich.

Several years ago. Duh Bus was included in the SmartCard program during the planning process.  Given the problems that the MTA has experienced with the fareboxes, PG management & maintenance personnel are going to be busy for awhile.

I know we've had problems with the ones in Baltimore. I wonder if the magnetic ticket readers (TRiM) have something to do with it. I haven't seen many problems with the ones around the DC only except the times when the Orbital AVL system went out and no one could log into the system. I heard they had seperated the two systems (I wouldn't blame them). As for PG, I'd like to see the day when I see a working farebox. Might have to bring out the ole bucket with the top cut out.
