Title: So What WMATA Bus Routes have you ridden?
Post by: btconet on October 06, 2008, 08:12:54 AM
Since this can include past routes, I didn't put in the Current Events board.

I realize this is a HIGHLY subjective question considering the WMATA network - examples:

If I ride between Georgetown and FH, I simply board a 30s line, I don't really care if it was a 32 or 35.

The S2 and S4 are very similar, as are the Y5-9, so one could logically ride one and say something like "I've ridden the Y."  Same can't be said for the L2 vs. the L8 or the D5 vs. the D8.

With this in mind, feel free to answer how you like, as long as its logical.

For some of us it might be what WMATA routes you haven't ridden.

I know off hand I never rode any of the old 5 routes except for the 5S.  I also haven't ridden the routes, A13, J15, D14 the old As from Southeast, the old Ps, the old F6, X1,3, old B4,5, old 14A, the other 17 routes other than the A and G, the other 18 routes other than the A,B, the 6, the 8 and none of the rush hour Z routes past and present.  I am pretty sure there is more, but can't  think of them off the top of my head.

I rode the last 5S from the Ballston the last day the 5S ran.  I have ridden most the buses you haven't ridden except I don't know to which 14A are you referring.  The 14A that went from Eisenhower Ave Station to the Alexandria rail yard or the 14 line from Maryland to Tyson's Corner.  I have ridden all the 14 routes from Maryland to Tyson's Corner but not the 14A from Eisenhower Ave to the Alex. Rail Yard.

It's easier to say which buses I haven't ridden which are the NH1, N11, N13, W19, 19L, 21's, 26G 26H and I cannot remember anymore at this time.

Did you ever ride the 14C, D or M to or from Lakeforest?

Has anyone ridden the 11H, P or Y?  How about the H17 or the K17?  Anyone ride the A13 via Englewood?

Does anyone remember the 13M that ran from Rosslyn to Pentagon at a time when for some reason the 38B was reduced to operating peaks only?  At that point, the 1B and 1C were extended to Rosslyn as well.  This was in the mid 90's.  The 13M route was crazy because it went from Rosslyn through Georgetown into DC then over to Pentagon and back.

I didn't ride the 14C or D, but did ride the 11H.  I got off somewhere in Alexandria(Fairfax County-weird), and I thiink this was the first time I caught Fairfax Connector.  On  the 11H I got a Flx new look, 8V edition  ;D.  Actually I got this bus from National Airport and rode into Alexandria(Fairfax County), where I got off.

I actually rode this thing, from Rosslyn, into DC and got a 9600 surburban into DC.  Decent ride on a surburban 9618 or 20 was my bus couldn't remember.

Actually it was the late 90's and I used to ride the 13M every day to Rosslyn on my way to Tyson's Corner and then catch the 404 or one of the 3's.  I still have dreams about missing the 13M and not being able to get to wherever I'm going in the dream.

The crazy routing of the 13M was the result of a comprimise due to the DC Government's inability to pay for it's WMATA fee.  In 1995 the District of Columbia was about to be in default of its payment to Metro.  Metro threatened to suspend all bus service in DC unless payment was made on time.  The threat was serious but probably not going to happen.  As a result of this many routes were cut back, eliminated or combined (the biggest changes that affected me were the combination of the 60 with K4/New Hampshire Avenue Line and the P1,2,7/Manor Park Line, the elimination of some of the late night A46, A48, 91 and 93 late trips [these buses had run all night long] and the 37 which has come back with changes but there were many others).  The 38B was one of those routes.  DC got in to a disagreement with Arlington County about who would pay for the 38B.  Arlington did not want to pay for the route at all as it duplicated the subway service and it was mostly patronized by DC residents.  A compromise was reached so that Arlington would pay only for service in Arlington and DC would pay for service in the District.  Thus the 13M was born running only in DC except for two stops in VA at the ends of the line.

Thanks for the reminders of what went on in the mid 90's.  I forgot that the P2 used to run to Takoma and then became the 62 and the K4/60 merger.  A lot happened in those few years that really changed the scope of transit in the area.  To a certain degree it eliminated some duplications of routes.

I never had a chance to ride the 13M and now of all things the 38B is actually being touted as the Orange LIne with a view and then new routes such as the 16Y and 3Y have entered the picture as the bus routes that parallel rail lines are showing to be valuable tools to help ease overcrowding.

Ah yea, the Sharon Pratt Kelley era.........ugh.  Another change that happened during the Kelley era, the split of the X2,X4 into what is now the U8/X2.

Anyone rode the A15, N11, and N13? How about the C18? I rode that one twice. Almost got stuck out in Waldorf. Luckily, it had night service.

I rode the C18 but never had a chance to ride the N11/N13.

Wes, wasn't the G8 a conglomeration of a couple of routes too?  I seem to remember a G4 and G6 or something else going to Avondale and it morphed into what the G8 does now?

There was also the 81 that ran to Kennedy Center along with the 80.

Oh yea Perry, I forgot about the G4, G6.  I remember the 81 also, think I still have both of those schedules.

The Pratt Kelly administration sure did do a job on metrobus routes in DC.  I remembered when the green line opened from inner DC to Anacostia, they wanted to end all of the routes that came out of lower SE DC at the Anacostia Station, and due to a huge outcry over that proposal, they had to change it.  The P6, if I remember was one of the results of that and also the A42,46,48.

Seeing now how the green line is getting crowded maybe keeping those routes the same might have lessened the crowding on the green line, maybe it wouldn't.
