Poll
Question:
So what's your favorite?
The folks at BTCo.net seem to think that they're better at transit videos than us here in DC. Let's prove 'em wrong. For the month of October, let's get our cameras ready and take video of DC's transit systems = WMATA, DASH, Ride On, everybody. Yes, even PG.
Once all the entries are in, we'll do a poll just like BTCo (but our vids will be better).
Wow, that's bad when your first reply comes from a B-more mug himself. I'm down.
Wish I'd have gotten rolling yesterday, but I can always roll down there next Saturd, uh... before the end of October to get some clips to include.
Damn that whip.
I'll try it out as I already have my song idea.....But I might need some help with putting the video together.
We'll get through it as a DC team. I need to get some footage myself - you know my idea already, but I only have 3 clips so far...maybe 4...
I may be around in D.C. come next week, as things are looking sweeter than honey at the moment. Besides, I already got some nice D.C. stuff on my Youtube (same screename as mine here, should anyone wish to go there and get them).
If there are more people here who are interested but not sure of their video skills, let me know. I'll be going through this for the first time as well so I can post whatever tutorials and advice I find, if it'll encourage anyone. Landoverdivision, I'm looking at you.

Hmm, I could use some better skills. My camera really sucks though, but I get whatever I can with the money I have.
I didn't mean your skills are bad, I meant you like to do video. Hook it up bro!

Oh see I knew that I was just testing you.
Less testing and more filming!
Ok, let's show BTco.net what the DC Area is made of. My camera is ready to go. Use some of my YouTube videos too Tristan.
I'm about 80% done the production work on my vid. I had made it about 75% through a prior project when I started to lose the interest in the theme, but somehow managed to find a new song that seemed to be a better fit.
Maybe another day or two and it should be online.
Dangit, I need a lot of time to get clips for my video. I need to do alot of DC Area traveling to get my video ready.
Well, ya still got 9 more days to capture stuff! Not sure about your theme or what have you, but the hot spots are always good to get lots of clips quick fast and in a hurry.
Now that I up and changed my own theme, I can really see where some extra clips at certain spots along the L2/4 would be ideal for it. Hmmmm,......www.amtrak.com....... ;D
Since only two entries are anywhere near completion, I'm thinking of extending the deadline to around mid-November. Any opposition?

No opposition. I can get the video done in that time :)

Whaddya mean only two? What about yo....um, never mind...
You should have been industrious and said "Due to the impending changes of the DC Transit Scene due to the addition of new Artics on the U8 and 5A, I've graciously decided to allow a 2 week extension to the Video Challenge."
And here I am about to leave to try to get freaking AMTRAK to get 3 or 4 touch up shots and you can't get stuff right outside your door. ???
One of my videos requires a certain driving style that I have not yet been able to capture...the other one, well you were with us during the glorious failure two weekends ago.
In other words, "What had happened was..."
I got my swap out shots today, and have finished and am currently uploading an entry.
I say "an" entry as opposed "my" entry, reason being that if I officially make this my entry, it sets the starting standard to beat, and ya'lls still got nearly three weeks to get out there, push the envelope, and mop the floor up with my basic video.
I'll post the link when it's ready for viewing.

Reason I don't have time to get clips is because I have to get this thing we human beings would call a "good education". In other words, I have school and i'm about to work so I have very little time on my hands.
I'm just razzin' you guys a bit! :) Education should definitely take priority over the hobbies, so it's all good. I'm just kind of addicted to making videos, and well, you know, addiction loves company.Glad to see DC peeps steppin it up.

Same goes to you B-More peeps. Hey, we as a DC-Baltimore Area team an make some videos that can knock out the compitition. Why are we competing against each other? We all as DC and B-More transit fans should work together as a team. ;D
That's whats up, LD.
I had hoped to share my first vid tonight, but *&^%^*$ Youtube's done crapped out on my upload twice - first at 93% complete, and then at 97% complete.
And of course, leave it to me, as I was waiting for the upload to hopefully complete, I started experimenting with a different, darker, modier song. So turns out, I might have to come down and get some more clips again!
The idea is to jar you dormant DC video people - myself included - into using the video mode on the cameras we all have...some healthy competition with the goal of in creasing exposure to DC's wonderfully rich transit network.

HAHA Ok. Back to the point. Tristan, I have my song idea ready and i'm going to head to Rosslyn, L'Enfant Plaza, White Flint, Cheverly, Addison Road, Largo Town Center, Pentagon, Pentagon City, Silver Spring, Suitland, Greenbelt, New Carrollton Stations, and Langley Park. I'm getting Ride On, WMATA, DUH BUS, FFX, DASH, PRTC OmniLink & OmniRide, Connect-A-Ride, Amtrak, Greyhound, MTA Commuter, and some Dillon's bus videos.
That's a lot of stops...can you get that done on time?

LOL. HAHA. Like I said ANYTHING is possible!! :
Good News! I got my entry posted. It's still processing as I type this, but it will probably be available by the time anyone reads this...
It is actually my third try.
On my first, I loved the song, but the end 2 minutes of it just didn't suit the video and the result started to just ramble.
On the second, the resulting video was actually perfect, with lyrics to match much of the video, but the song was just a bit too "breezy" for me.
A couple of days ago, I was simply rooting through my music collection and dropped this track into the Video Studio. Out of boredom, I started fidgeting with it and dropped a couple of test clips in, and it suddenly clicked. Three Days Later, the result...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYmvFKy4jFE&fmt=18
The song is "The Garden" by The Silk Demise, not something you've likely heard of. I particularly love the intro and transition into its second part, upon which I've placed some easter eggs in the form of vintage clips. Perhaps that's cheating, but I thought it put a neat perspective on what's out there now and how it won't last forever. I still have over 4 minutes of October clips in there.
The song lyrics (yes they are English, and though hard to initially figure out, once you read them, they do match) have nothing whatsoever to do with any transit theme, but they don't have much to do with anything from what I can see ("Stack a Grain to a Grain, til it falls down again"), they don't have much to do with anything. Still I like the vocals and love the instrumentals and drop ins and drop outs, so I'm sticking with it.
Hope you enjoy!

Hey BTCo guess what? I have my song iea, and I have my first few videos. I'm heading to Cheverly Ststion, Georgetown, P.G Plaza Station, and Addison Road Station tomorrow. That's just the beginning of my travel journey.
I posted my two earlier drafts on Youtube as well.
The whole time I filmed on my two visits, I was aiming to contribute to this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEEyuvAot7w&fmt=18 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEEyuvAot7w&fmt=18)
Only problem was the end was just a whole lot of space to fill with nothing standing out as appropriate. I like the end result, but didn't love it.
Then after getting frustrated with the first one, I put this one out that truly is gorgeous:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Id43j3pKkg&fmt=18 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Id43j3pKkg&fmt=18)
though it was a little too happy for my tastes...
In the end, I still think my third try was the charm:

Alright my video is...well I wanted to do two but I couldn't get enough footage for either, so maybe I'll blend them. My subjects were too specific, I guess.
It would probably be end of this week at the earliest...so holla if you want to wait up for one more entry, or I can just put up the voting right now for the entries that actually were on time or close to on time.
I'd still post my video either way, it'd just be an issue of if I was in the voting or not.

Cool - love the theme. Is that light program on the buses still going on or was that cast aside?
Still going, but I haven't heard of new installs even though supposedly there was money in the budget this year for more buses...
I thought I had some good news for those looking to make some neat videos affordably.
Got an email that Muvee Reveal was now HALF OFF at $49.99. This is the newest incarnation of a software that automatically analyzes clips and music and makes a video based on this.
The original version (Muvee AutoProducer) was buggy and crashed half the time, but when working, could effortlessly produce slick videos in minutes that you couldn't recreate manually in other software like Corel or WMM without some extensive time and serious effort.
I hadn't downloaded the trial of Reveal yet and was saving it for a rainy day. The price cut was the incentive to try it out.
Well, for me, Muvee has gone from a program that crashed half the time while producing slick effects the other half of the time to one that crashes ALL the time and doesn't even offer effects as neat as those in the original version.
Feel free to try it - maybe you'll have better luck:

Waste of money when they first installed them. They don't work half the time and I don't see any affect they had in visibility. People still don't pay attention and dart out across the street narrowly being hit by a car or a bus. (Especially at Silver Spring). It's not worth getting killed trying to get a bus.
That was a great video Tristan i really enjoyed that, I now want to make movies but my subject would probably be trains and techno music LOL ;) Too bad half the video is the credits.
Yeah I know but when your choices are 2100s and 2300s, yea I coulda put some more clips in if I could find them but I woulda been beating a dead horse.
Corel is half price today and tomorrow only - just $49.99

The poll will stay open for 7 days. You can only vote once, but you can change your vote if you'd like. Results will be shown at the end of the voting.
Good luck everyone, and thanks for contributing!
Well, congratulations to Rideonrulez for winning the 2008 DC Area Video Challenge.
We'll have more challenges throughout 2009, maybe even monthly. So, if you didn't win or didn't participate this time, there are always other chances. I think a photo contest is in order as well.

Oh...oops...well....keep voting!
I set it to end on December 9, I thought that meant 12:00:00 but that apparently means 11:59:59.
It says "Voting closes: Today at 03:22:57 PM."
