Also, 4368 is now at Landover, as well as 4370 and up if that wasn't mentioned already. 4369 is still at Royal for now.

and to answer your question Christopher, 2116 seems to be at Royal now according to Nextbus. According to its GPS location, it is at Braddock Rd around Quaker Lane, that's Royal turf.

Really? What day because I rode it on the S line.
I know I have a pic of it. I might be a bit off on the date. I have to check the metadata.
Yesterday:
9351 on the Q4
9352 on the Y5 (non-working signs so the driver had to stop at every stop and say the route number. the bus had poor acceleration as well)
9390 on the Y9
9831 on the Q4. you could barely hear the engine because the bus had a so much bass.

6111 and 6186 on the 34
6187 remains at Montgomery
4305 and 6210 on the T2
3911 and 3920 on the M4
6308 on the F6, that bus has the "centered route number" syndrome, where it will say "F6 New Carrollton Station" then flip to "______F6______"
at the new 30s bus stop across the street from the original bus stop (where Hechts used to be), instead of having a "30's Limited Stop" sign for the 37, it has a MetroExtra sign. Ken and I were stumped when we saw that.
6513 is at Bladensburg.

Apparently the 06 Hybrid are getting the new stamp as in the 6300/6400's. I saw one on an DE40LFR on the F1 earlier.
Saw a Ride On Orion I at Friendship Heights last night, didn't catch the number. The bus scene there looked quite different than the last time I was in the states about 10 months ago.
Also, I'll throw a few other things out here:
1. I can understand why people get frustrated when Metro wants to raise fares and the first thing I see when I get to Union Station having already brought my my backpack, suitcase on wheels, and duffel bag about 6000 miles in the previous 26 hours is two out of service escalators. Of course, with no money, the escalators will not be fixed, but that is another discussion.
2. Keep in mind that by the time my train reached Farragut North at 7:05 PM Eastern time last night, I had been traveling for 26 hours, so my jetlag may have been a factor in what I saw, but at the north end of the pocket while heading outbound on track A2, we passed a red signal at that end of the pocket while going at full, normal speed. I didn't pay enough attention to see if the signal dropped as we approached it as happened to me many years ago at Medical Center or if it had been red the entire time, but not a very assuring situation.
3. The new numbers on the exteriors of the cars look really ugly in my opinion. Even uglier are the door numbers near the middle of the door leaves, and also the way they just scratched away at the old numbers, both interior and exterior.

Interesting sighting this morning. I saw 5442 on none other than the...........L1. For me it's the first time seeing an artic on that line. Also saw what looked to be a VRT El Dorado EZ-Rider II heading towards West Falls Church Station.
Not sure the exact date that the former Hechts exit at Friendship Heights opened (the adjacent Whole Foods opened on May 18) but as part of the reconstruction there, the non-WMATA escalator between the rotunda and landing has been removed, and there are only stairs now. It also appears to me as if that intermediate landing is smaller than I remembered it being.
Also, the bus stop sign in front of the new development there has a MetroExtra flag for the 37.
Wes: on a historical note DC Transit started the L1 as a premium rush hour express to operate between Chevy Chase and Capitol Hill. DC Transit used coaches on this route (first ACF Brills then they were replaced by fishbowl suburbans - see representative photos) whose destination signs didn't have room for route numbers so the signs read either Chevy Chase or Capitol Hill. From that perspective the use of artics is a diminution in the quality of the service that was provided by DC Transit (lol).

How does the L5 fit into things historically? My recollection is that today's L1 is akin to the old L5, which ran the same route to Potomac Park but required a surcharge to board.

Given the anemic level of service on the DC L's, artics on the weekdays when it's a Montgomery route make a lot of sense.

Looking at the schedule for the first time in forever, I partially retract that statement...for weekdays. Weekends are another story.
Look at the schedule again. There is more frequent service through Adams-Morgan on a Saturday at midday than on a weekday. Considering most of the ridership north of Van Ness changes for the Metro (thus all the short turns) and the fact that Farragut Square isn't a huge rider destination or origin on the weekends, I think the service is adequate. Why do you think all this extra service is needed? I don't remember if the L4 ran on weekends before its mid-1990 discontinuance, and it used to run all the way to the Kennedy Center in its previous incarnation, but still.

I got my first D42LFA ride today on the N4 from near Farragut Square up to Friendship Heights. The bus never had the chance to get much speed, and unlike in Jerusalem, bus drivers here actually follow speed limits, so I never got a sense of what the bus's acceleration actually is like. Is it really necessary to have both the CleverDevice display and the regular Stop Requested display show the same message simultaneously? I found the seats to be more uncomfortable than others in the WMATA fleet. Anyone know why the area by the rear door is marked for no standees?
Saw a C40LF that was on the D6 (I forget the number) that came all the way up the Dalecarlia Parkway to Westmoreland to turn around. Rare sight, no photo unfortunately.

They do (even the DE62LFA) have pretty good acceleration. I wouldn't say they're quite as fast as the DE40LF/R when they first hit the streets, but in terms of the acceleration, I have no complaints.
I've noticed that the area near the back door on pretty much any low floor bus (WMATA and other agencies) does seem to attract standees when the bus is crowded. I'm not defending the practice, but I suspect many just don't want to go up those steps, especially when they may be getting off soon
Thanks Wayne. I'll just have to get one under speedier conditions next time.

The stop requested on the interior sign is a programmed feature so I doubt it can be turned off.
Do the seats really need to be like butter. It's a transit bus not a commuter coach.
As for the D6, there is construction around Sibley Hospital so that turn around is blocked off. They have to go all the way up Dalecarlia to Westmoreland to turn back around.
The rear door is marked for no standees is just obvious. People blocking the doors impedes people that are exiting the bus (plus it avoids that incessant rear door warning that people don't seem to hear).

I suggest riding a Montgomery DE42LFA (in Montgomery County not one of the DC routes like N4), with routes that have some parts with long stretches between stops like the Q line and Y line (and maybe Z line), you'll get to truly see how fast these things can go.

I haven't been in the states for a full week yet, let's give it some time here. I wasn't expecting a super fast ride on either the N4 or 36, but there are some sections that are potentially fast, yet neither driver really took advantage of them. (I rode a 3700 on the G2 yesterday, and 6360 on the 36 tonight.) Speaking of which, the driver on the 36 announced at Jenifer and 44th that it was the last stop and that everyone had to get off. Needless to say, I was not happy about being discharged from the bus at a location that isn't a stop short of the end of the line so the driver could have his layover where he wanted it to be. Here is a copy of what I just emailed WMATA:
QuoteOn Saturday evening/Sunday morning, I was on bus 6360 on the Route 36, coming from Washington Circle toawrds Friendship Heights. After turning left on Jenifer Street due to the construction at the Friendship Heights terminal, the bus driver stopped at the intersection with 44th Street and announced that this was the last stop and everyone had to get off. When I asked him if he would continue to the signed terminal point on Willard Avenue, he said "yes, but not right now" and that I had to get off. The location where we were forced to alight is NOT a posted bus stop, and when I took an N4 bus on Friday, that bus took us all the way to the corner of Willard Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue.
After making everyone get off, the bus driver of bus 6360 pulled up a bit and took a break before the intersection with Western Avenue. By the time I walked to the corner of Willard and Wisconsin, he had come around and started his next trip as a Route 32. It is unclear to me why we were all made to get off nearly 2 blocks before the actual end of the line, which meant I had to walk that much further home.
Thank you for your attention into this matter. I look forward to receiving your response.

I just saw the D6 detour info on the WMATA site. There isn't anything about Friendship Heights on there however though. Anyone know what the deal is there?
As for the Friendship Heights construction, I still have no clear idea what's going on there or whats going to happen there (even the bus operators don't know themselves).

One more thing: 2028 and 2029 are at Landover, so Christopher wasn't seeing things when he saw 2028 on the F6. However, 2025-2027 and 2030-2032 are still at West Ox.
Could someone please post instructions on how to do get this data through NextBus and perhaps could we have it posted as a sticky on the board here for the rest of us?

Then again, it's not the first time a random Montgomery Metro-E fills in for an F4/F6 trip. I think it was 4096 I saw on the F6 about a year ago or so (or 4095, or 4098, maybe 4097, I forgot)

I don't know when it closed since it was closed when I got back to the US last week, but there was no notification of the detours on the WMATA website or the Ride On website, and they didn't even remove any of the stop flags or indicate that the routes were on detour at the missed stops that I passed by on Massachusetts Avenue or Wisconsin Avenue. I didn't make it into the terminal proper so there may have been signs there.

The Phantoms went to Nicholson before the Champions took their little 8-month vacation.
If they're here to stay, I see the last of the Helldorados going first, followed by the pre-1996 Gilligs and sadly 5529.

yeah, but the Phantoms also went to Nicholson before that large order of baby Gilligs arrived, which was pretty much after the Champions disappeared. speaking of 5529, I saw that bus today on the 79. I'm still shocked as to how that bus is the only Orion I left in Ride-On, I would have expected the hammerheads to last longer or something like that (and even 5546 and 5547 which sadly I never got to ride before they retired)

So yesterday I took a view of Annex from a different standpoint so I found that 4003 4023 and 4045 (i think) are retired and have been scrapped. Also 4296 have suffered damage to the windsheild and the top where the sign and the roof of the bus has a huge dent in it. To my surpise annex can take tic and store more buses if it wasn't from the retired Flxs and the emplyees parked cars.
also breda rehab # 3003 still has the old doors closing chime it was nice to hear, and if anyone has caught on to the rohrs running without working lights, well that has passed on to the CAFs and Alstoms as well. And one of the REX buses (forgot what number) seems to be peelingand exposing it's wrap like feature. And 2506 was on the 7A wit a D Block hmm perhaps signs of the new CNG facility on the way???
today 6116 M6 although it's a Voith bus it has an allison scream
and 2168 was on the V5 and also from yesterday I took a ride on Fairfax Connectirs 2010 D40LFRs and those things can move. I highly recommend anyone to check those out. :)

those new Connector 9600s are NICE, the AC is excellent and they drive pretty freakin nice
now when you say that 3003 has the old doors closing chime, do you mean the one that 5100/5101 have or the
old old one that only said "doors opening" and "doors closing"?

Going along with that Christopher said, yes 4318 and 4319 are Montgomery buses now, just confirmed that from Nextbus.
BUT...it doesn't stop there, apparently 4337 and 4338 are now Montgomery buses as well (4339 and up are still at Royal though)

so far, it looks like Annex has:
6101-6157, 6159, 6160, 6179-6188
Saw a Baby Orion V from Western at Fort Totten, signed for the 60. Also saw a 30 footer on McKinley at Western signed Not in Service about 25-30 minutes later (my timing might be off, I was on my bike) but I didn't get the number either time, so I don't know if I saw the same bus twice, or two different buses.
6470 (I think) was signed for the 96 to McLean Gardens on Kennedy Street between 14th and 16th. A 4000 Series Orion V signed NOT IN SERVICE discharged two passengers at the corner of Kennedy and 16th, I didn't think any bus actually is in service at that point (though the buses often take that section of Kennedy on deadhead moves). I don't remember the number on that bus either, sorry.
6158 is at Annex George and 6511 was on the P12 thought i was 6311 diddnt have the Stimulous sticker on it

when you saw 9346 was it today?
WMATA and FFX Connector destination signs.
1) I saw an "Express" painted Orion VII (or is there only one at FMR?) at Dunn Loring on the 2T with the green destination sign set. The sign read "2Tu" in the route number area with "Tysons Corner" in the destination area. So... the sign read "2Tu Tysons Corner".
2) How common is it for there to be different variations of a destination sign? On FFX Connector's 950 toward Reston, I've seen two types of the same type of sign (the LED signs, not the old flip dots):
950 RESTON TOWN CTR // 950 via HERNDON- // 950 MONROE P&R, and
950 RESTON TOWN CTR // 950 via HERNDON-MONROE (in smaller font so it fits on one line)
Too bad I wasn't able to get the bus #s.

Don't even mention Connector. They're still in that north and south mindset with the signs. Try the 310 down south. Tristan knows what I'm talking about.

oh, and today I saw Ride-On's 5193 on the 45
While riding home on the Metro from downtown today, I noticed that at Woodley Park, an inbound train had stopped short of the tunnel entrance and my train stopped a bit short at Friendship Heights. Not sure either was enough that if it had been an 8 car train, the last car would have been off the platform, but it seems to me that the operators need to pull all the way up or the whole not stopping in the center is pointless.
Also, while on the D6, I think it was on 2339 or 2329, the bus was not announcing transfers to the Metro, although the Clever Device was working normally otherwise.

This has happened to me a bunch of times at Silver Spring since last Winter, always for 6-car trains . I think there are a few operators who seem confident that they can stop a 6-car train at the 6-car marker (vs. the ones who get 6 and 8 mixed up even though Metro uses different typefaces/colors for those signs).
Also, 6167 (the D40LFR in the Local scheme) on the F4.

These trains weren't stopping at the 6 car marker. They were stopping about 3-5 feet short of the 8 car marker/tunnel mouth. IIRC, the operators only have about that much leeway in terms of stopping position on an 8 car train, so it is a bad habit to have.

Two rail observations: Metro seems to have a new policy of "isolating" cars with broken AC in extreme heat (rode a train with one and saw 2 others with dark cars). Also, another short-stopper with a 6-car train at Van Ness, stopped short of the end of the platform by a couple feet.

This is not a new policy by any means, and a car can be isolated for other reasons than non-operative AC.
This just in: another Ride-On Champion has been spotted in Germantown, on the 98, turning onto Middlebrook Rd. I was too far away to see the number, but it definitely looked like a Champion.

You can tell that they (or at least 4343) have very recently moved as recent as probably yesterday or so, since the routeTag for 4343 still says W13, the coordinates point to Montgomery Division. As for 4345-4366, they remain at Royal for now.
In case you're wondering: yes, Royal did get more 2100s. 2132 and 2135 are now at Royal, while 2133, 2134, and 2136+ remain at Northern.

I wonder why 2135's routeTag says "Z11"...
It looks like 2160 is at Bladensburg, but I'm not sure if it's there for repairs or whatever, seeing that 2161 and 2162 are still at Northern.
The same goes with 2231, which is a Western bus

RO 5396 on the 23, not announcing the stops
Metrobuses 2084, 6019, and 4329 all broke down today...2084 broke down in the center lane of Georgia Ave southbound around Spring Street. 4329 broke down heading southbound on the Q line at Viers Mill and Atlantic. Guess where 6019 broke down? Right across the street from 4329, on a Q6 heading northbound. I was riding the Q4 northbound when I saw it, and when I arrived at Rockville to wait for the next bus, I saw it up and running again.
5318 on the S4, unfortunately I did not get a chance to ride it...the one time I actually needed to ride the S bus downtown...

RO 5396 on the 23, not announcing the stops
They've been having problems with the Orbital system since they got it. I know they have the route data and stops programmed into the system, but for some reason, things aren't working well. I haven't heard an exterior announcement on any bus in months.

U2 Anacostia Station
I've seen this before...a long time ago (like 1-2 years ago) on the rear sign of a Flxible (I think it was 9773). It was on the Q2, and the sign said pretty much like the U2 sign said...
Q2 Shady Grove Station
Q2 Shady Grove Station
although the destination didn't completely fit on the rear sign. so yeah, that said, I don't think it's a new thing that WMATA is trying, it might be just a programming error. Another example of that (different, but still a rear sign programming error) was when 2801 first got the Titan sign (back before Silver Spring TC was closed), instead of the rear sign displaying the route number, it was scrolling the next stop that would be displayed on the Clever Devices (like Georgia Ave and Kennedy St for example)

They used the same limited stop programming from the 2800s on the rest of the express buses. I guess they forgot to take out the Metro Extra part. Ironically, most of the 79 Metro Extra buses now just show Express.
