This'll get a lot of debate going, but why hasn't anyone thought of getting the core counties of the DC area together to make their own state? I know it'd take a lot of work and Annapolis/Richmond would fight it to death (not to mention Charles/St. Mary's counties would practically become an enclave), but it's something to think about besides just DC statehood.
Not only would Annapolis and Richmond fight it, but so would Washington -- that is, it's not just up to the states to create a new state. It's a much larger issue than Metro is concerned, an an issue that happens in a lot of states, the divide between the big cities and the small towns and the difficulty in balancing the priorities of both. If we segregated things that way, we'd have about 150 states, 30 of which would be rich powerhouses and the rest would be in shambles. Some amount of Robin Hood-dom is necessary to keep things moving.
I used to say we should make a North Virginia, but then I really thought about how disastrous the whole thing would become if every big city wanted to split off from its home state.
The entire method MD uses to pay for transit in the state is inequitable when you consider that MD pays the entire cost of Baltimore's public transit system and MARC yet quibbles penuriously over the comparatively few dollars it gives to Metro.
