Title: December Service Changes
Post by: 79MetroExtraMD on December 02, 2009, 01:09:12 PM
If it was not mentioned here already, here it is. The Q2 will be restructured into 5 different routes effective 27 December 2009. The routes are as follows: Q1, Q2, Q4, Q5, Q6.

Q1: Shady Grove to Silver Spring (bypassing Montgomery College-Rockville)
Q2: same route as usual
Q4: Rockville to Silver Spring
Q5: Shady Grove to Wheaton (bypassing Montgomery College-Rockville)
Q6: Shady Grove to Wheaton

After looking at the schedule, the Q1 and Q2 will only run AM rush and late evening. The Q2 northbound in the AM will short trip at MC Rockville, the Q1 will run the full gamut to Shady Grove. The Q4 and Q6 will run middays with combined 15 minute service along Veirs Mill Road (30 min headways for each branch). AM and PM rush hour periods will have combined 7-10 minute intervals along Veirs Mill. There is not a limited stop Q9 in this pick (guessing that will be postponed until 2010).

I found a few more changes.

28X: New limited stop peak service between Bailey's Crossroads and Tysons Corner.
D line: D3 discontinued. D1 will operate between Federal Triangle and Glover Park.
D5, D6: Timetables combined into single timetable. Same routes (possibly to save paper with having to print two different schedules for essentially the same corridor).

I figured they wouldn't go with the Q2A/Q2B thing -- in fact, I started to post on that when someone said it would be confusing but my browser froze and I just never went back.  It was probably just for discussion purposes.

Bout time for the 28X -- they kept putting signs up saying "let's talk about service on the 28A and 28B" and I'm thinking "We've talked about it three times already and you haven't even made minor adjustments, much less the express route!"  But anyway...I wonder if it gets another new name and paint scheme.

All of those Q's.  One thing for sure is that WMATA knows how to create confusion on their routes.  This is right up there with all of the Y's.  I know some may disagree, but keep in mind... This needs to be well thought out for Joe/Jane Rider and not transit fans.

It's just Bailey's to Tysons for now. I mean the 28T already provides rush hour service along the WFC to Tysons portion. I thought they were going to go the full Monty down to King Street.

As for now, these were the changes I've seen so far as they start posting the new timetables online.

I feel ya. I'm still trying to get a system down for the new Q line. I'm so used to having just one line that 5 just makes it feel like another Y line. I think what I put in the first post kinda narrows down what the service will be but we have to see come the 27th how this all pans out (passenger and operator wise).

IT'S ABOUT TIME we get a renovation on the Q line. Hey Ken, here's the picture I promised...

SO FAR...these new signs can be found from Shady Grove Station (or the stop after that, I wasn't paying attention until Montgomery College) up to Viers Mill Rd and Dodge St (but not at Rockville Station yet and not at Dodge St going northbound)

The odd thing about this picture is, this was taken at Viers Mill Rd and Dodge St in the southbound direction. Here's the thing, this is the stop IMMEDIATELY after Rockville Station, why is there a C4 on the sign???

Someone must've put up the sign meant for south of Randolph Road here instead of the one with just the Q routes on them. Happens. I've noticed the newer signs are more rounded on the edges (hinting a possible redo of the signage). Now, just get these suckers to be reflective and you have a sign.

What is the "main" Y route?   The Y8?

Oh my, they sure made this Q thing confusing as heck.  I guess once people get used to it, it will work well.  Of course, they could stand to use a good P/R campaign for what will soon be known as the Q's

I believe it's the Y5 since it goes into all out-of-the-way areas like leisure world and norbeck park and ride, etc...
the Y9 would be the one that bypasses all those areas, same with the Y8 except that one goes to Leisure World and short-trips there on weekends

as a frequent Q2 rider, I expect a large amount of confusion the day the new Q line kicks into effect, which is why people should be notified on these changes ahead of time

The Y routes of Viers Mill Rd, is basically what this is. And I like it. Hopefully this overhaul works, but confusion will be inevitable.

I highly agree.  With the whole new stupid look with the huge plastic NFIs and "New Metrobus" campaigns, you'd think that SOMEONE in marketing would've thought to say, "hey, we're coming up with a new style of Q service in December - let's TELL THE PEOPLE about it!"

I was JUST on the Q2 last week and saw NOTHING hinting to this.  Sigh....outside of Nextbus, WMATAbus isn't being so grand right now.  Give me my 20 year old Flx and schedules with a Misc. bus on the front any day! ^_^

So, as I read these "Q" changes it will not be possible after 12/27/2009 to have a "one bus"  ride between Shady Grove and Silver Spring during non-rush hours.  A passenger who wants this option must transfer at either Wheaton or Rockville or take the more expensive Metrorail.  This is supposed to help the transit dependent?  This reads like job security for Metro supervisors and operators.

I think there are very little folks traveling the full length of the route during midday plus there are various options at Wheaton to get to Silver Spring. The majority of the ridership is along Veirs Mill Road and the new structure is supposed to provide more frequent service along the corridor (along with RO48).

As for marketing and such, it's still early in the month and I think they are printing out the brochures to be distributed soon. The changes are 3.5 weeks in advance, but I think the brochures will be out within the next week or so.

I doubt many people go from Shady Grove to Silver Spring, so the lack of a one seat ride there shouldn't be a huge issue.  For those of you wanting a Q9 type, I don't think Viers Mill Road needs a true limited type service.  While there are many high volume stops, I don't think they are spread out in such a way that limited stop service would be feasible.  People would complain so much that their stop should be a limited stop that eventually there would be hardly any local only stops, and your Q9 would meet a demise similar to that of the 9 train in New York.

I'm sure they will market this, and it seems as if the only way to find out about these changes is to snoop around on the website.  A link to the schedules would be appreciated, since they aren't really online and available to the public just yet.  If they come up with a good system of signage (i.e. include VIA MONT COLL on all the headsigns for all buses that stop there), I'm sure people can get the hang of things after a short period of time.

Who actually has taken the Q from end to end? I once did it during rush hour for a job interview on Gude a while ago and it just dragged on and on and on especially down Viers Mill and the Montgomery College detour doesn't help at all.

Still, wouldn't it make more sense to not do the full route during rush hours but instead do it during off-peak to merely simplify things?

I've possibly done it while busfanning, but perhaps I've just gone as far as Wheaton.  Other than that, I can't think of why I ever would.

I took the Q2 from Shady Grove to Silver Spring a few times. Basically it was a way to get "home" after fanning Ride On's northern county routes.  This was in the PM hours, so it wasn't so bad.

I'm guessing the cutbacks between Wheaton and Spring and the Rock and the Grove are for cost savings primarily.

I do know that ridership on that section of the Q2 is much lower than the Wheaton to Rockville section - at least from my observations.

There are a variety of ways to get between Shady Grove and Rockville without that Q2 - there's Ride On's 55 and 59...anything else?

During rush hours there's also the 63 if office parks and King Farm are your cup of tea.

and the original Q4 is present-day Ride-On route 48 if i'm not mistaking.

Plus, yesterday I rode the Q2 from Shady Grove all the way to Silver Spring and today I rode it from Mont. College to Silver Spring...splitting the route in two would make me have to transfer at Wheaton but i'm sure there's not a lot of other people who do what I do.

Actually...come to think of it, what about students at MC Rockville wanting to go to MC Silver Spring? They would have to add an extra bus ride to their schedule...

Montgomery College runs a van service (which replaced Ride On's old Route 127) that connects the two campuses and makes a stop at the Silver Spring metro.

The original Q1 was a limited stop route.

NO. . .  THE Original Q1 was EXPRESS from Silver Spring to National Bureau of Standards (via Montgomery Village) in the early 70's. Its counter part was the Q3 (Express) running from Federal Triangle to Atomic Energy Commission.

Both buses would meet at the THEN Montgomery Village Transit Center, exchange passengers & go on their way.

Both Q1 & Q3 had

1 trip north in the AM rush
1 trip south in PM rush

In looking at the new schedule, there seems to be NO WMATA service to Montgomery College (Rock) on Sundays/Holidays.
I wonder those who aren't paying attention to the service adjustments, wanting to go to M/C and are on the Q line. .  I wonder how many will kick & scream at the driver, saying the driver missed the stop.  ::)

Well, on Sundays, the 46 goes into M/C which should be good enough. The 55 bypasses MC Germantown on Sundays. To be honest, there's plenty of service at the college and near it to where a little walk out to Hungerford Drive shouldn't be a problem for most folks.

Regarding the "Q"

Why in an era when nearly every transit agency is seeking to simplify their system to make it less bewildering to new riders does WMATA still insist on making things far more complicated than they have to be?

Worse yet, they abandon their standards at some points (see Route 5A which has a number of patterns all under the 5A banner) but stick anally to others for far more minor deviations such as in this case. (though the even number running only in peaks tends to depart from these same standards)

It would have seemed to me the logical thing would have been to do a 3 way split of the line in which the Q2 (full routing sans MoColl) would have been converted to the peak limited under the Q9 label.  This would be cost effective for WMATA in getting buses across the entire route more quickly, while shaving travel time for those in peak hours travelling the longest distance.  Then, the local service could have been split as elected (SG-W, RV-SS) under Q2 and Q4 banners, with it simply skipping MoColl at non-prime times under the same designators. (gasp!)

The densest part of the line would get the heaviest service, the long haul peak riders would see their travel times improve, and WMATA comes away with a more efficient service that can be readily marketed.  As it stands now, it's just too confusing to readily market!

I'm guessing they wanted to do an overlap for quite some time now. It's Veirs Mill Road that got the priority for the service since most folks ride the main portion of the line. I remember times waiting at Rockville for a southbound bus only to have a northbound come up to Shady Grove. I was discussing something with George about doing turn backs at Rockville during rush hour and some off peaks because of the amount of service between Rockville and Shady Grove. The "Q9" might be coming next year (I'm suprised it wasn't in this round).

As for Montgomery College, i do agree that most buses shouldn't service the college (It's about 5 minutes out of the way. 1.5-2 mins to go in and about 3 or so minutes at that light). A bus every half an hour would have done since the 46 and 55 already provide good service during the day (plus most of the students use their ID to get on anyway).

In regards to simplification, I've seen a proposed X9 route that goes from Metro Center to Capitol Heights that incorporates the X2 and Cap Hts portion of the U8.

I totally agree.  Even if they managed to achieve their goal in terms of reducing bus bunching etc., this is confusing as heck.  First thing I thought is that the people behind this created all of these (extra Q designations) because that's the way it's always been done.  No one seems to be thinking outside the box.  Actually, IMO, to strive for simplifying things should be common sense and not quite seen as thinking outside the box.  This is just as bad as the Ys and I'd bet the rent that the average person doesn't know all of the variations and for those who do... it took some time for them to get them straight.

One of my personal pet peeves is how WMATA gives each and every service variation a separate designation, especially the peak directional crap.  After all the years I've been living here, I'm still convinced their route numbering is mind-boggling.  To someone from nearly any other major city, if you look at all the routes on a bus stop sign on Georgia Ave in Silver Spring, they could logically (but wrongly) conclude that there's a lot more service than it really is serving that stop.  Looking at one on Columbia Pike and you'd think that an endless line of buses should be passing with all of those 16 line variations.

I'm a little in the "eh" camp with the indication of service patterns.  If there is a deviation that causes a place to not be served, like an outer terminus that isn't always served, I think it makes more sense to me to just see "Y5" and know that it's something different that either doesn't go as far as I want (if I already know the system), or at least would cause me to ask questions before I get on the bus and then end up in the middle of where-the-f*** waiting for the next bus, if any, to come along.  Like those weekend Y shorts to Leisure World.  Dunno if a trip that goes into Leisure World and then comes right back out and keeps going is worth a separate designation.

I do think, however, that a number-letter combination that shows a clear trunk ("25" for example), and a clear version ("B") is more clear than Y5/7/8/9, which seems to me like 4 distinct routes.  Dunno why though.  Of course, we could go the way of the 21st century and make route numbers like software versions (25.1).

Of course, we could go the way of the 21st century and make route numbers like software versions (25.1).

umm...why is there a pic of 5402 on the Q2 with an F block?

I think it was photoshopped actually, if you look carefully at the side sign, you can kinda see it says "5A Dulles"

If you look carefully on the WMATA website homepage. . .  sub catagory Buses. .  you will see the Columbia Pike-Farragut Square bus line 16Y being advertised, (DOWNTOWN EXPRESS) but the picture was taken at the Silver Spring METRO.

The telltale. .  look in the background & you see 2/3 of a Ride-On bus, directly in front of the Silver Spring Station entrance. Even the bus photographed is a Q2, not a 16Y.

I guess the people who produce the brochures, don't have the transit knowledge to produce brochures that actually describe the routes being described.

Indeed.  Honestly, the telltale sign (other than the NABI) for me was the fact that there were so many people with these suitcases.  Then I saw the F and figured out the rest.  It's a great photoshop job, though!

I'll match with the Q2 advertising the 16Y with the ad for the B30 having a random 5200 with "70 - HALF & O SW" on the destination sign.
