One of the Reston Limousine cutaways wrapping up a run on the 8 in Silver Spring*
9803 on the J1
095010 leaving Nicholson on one of the infamous "Special Transportation" runs

* Might the fleet problem at Nicholson be the low-floor cutaways? I haven't seen any in over a week.

There always seems to be an odd J5 run that is an artic, but yes it is too much bus for a route that maybe fills 2/3 of a high floor, 3/4 of a low floor tops.

As for 5404 on the "28 - Silver Spring Downtown Dasher", when did the 28 go from being the Downtown Dasher to the VanGo? I still think there is a sign for the downtown dasher in the south entrance of Silver Spring station.

That J5 is probably an interline route and instead of pulling out another bus for it, it was blocked to do a J5 and then go to the garage.  We do that all of the time.  Even though it looks odd, it's cheaper than getting another operator or pulling from another route that would have a longer deadhead.

Some of the J5 runs might interline, I think however there is one odd block that is solely J5 or at one point was solely J5. I think the afternoon run in question does 1.5 round trips as a J5 then turns into a Q or Y.

The 28 was called the Downtown Dasher before it was called the Van Go.  I think the name change took place in either 2002 or 2003, and at about that time as well, the service was changed from being rush hour only to being all day.

Interesting!  I saw this bus (and 5345) being delivered some weeks ago.  That said, it's clear the Ride On's priority is to provide the service, even if it means sending out a bus without a farebox.  I remember this happening also in the past with the last batch of Orion VIIs.

I saw 4056 on the D5 this AM.  I know Bladensburg has a few Metro-Es now, but it's still a bit strange to see them on Bladensburg routes.  Also they had 3014 doing a D5 trip on Wednesday afternoon.  This was a first for me.

Seeing that there are (were?) Eldorados painted in the VanGo scheme, your guess seems about right. Interesting that there's no way for the older signs to display the "Silver Spring/VANGO - FREE" signs that all the LED signed buses can display.

And at Wayne, same thing happened with the 2008 Gilligs; I remember getting a free ride to work one morning (on a week I didn't have a pass!) because the bus hadn't had its farebox installed yet.

Tell me. Why does Northern have to f*** every bus they got up then give them to another division. Well i dont blame it because they got the 70/71.

I agree that it is bad to see brand new buses being trashed.  However, I still don't believe in depriving the rough areas of new equipment for that reason.

That doesn't really look "trashed" to me -- that looks like a mechanic moving too fast and not securing the bolt after his work...and the roach trap is a fact of life.  Everyone, and I do mean everyone, and their mammas, aunts, uncles, and all their belongings, rides the bus and you never know when you'll have some extra passengers after that.  I've seen people move on the bus, I mean move with boxes and trashbags full of stuff.  Even at DASH, in sleepy old Alexandria, we have to have our buses exterminated monthly or so to keep the problem in check.

The only problem is that it literally is one route that trashes Northern's buses (do the buses that see service on the 90's take much abuse)?

Case in point: Anything that usually stays on the S's usually is in good shape.

Well yeah but the 90s isn't the only Northern route that gets trasehed try the 70,H8 etc Plus I've seen or an S route that has gotten trashed by little girls eating sunflower seeds spiting them on the floor just nasty.

the thing is...people who trash the bus can be seen on ANY route...I was on 6394 on the J2 last month, and people in the back who were eating peanuts were stupid enough to leave peanut shells all over the floor (not to mention, the guy reeks of not taking a shower for over a month). The point is, moving buses away from Northern does not mean that the buses are immune from being trashed.

Interesting Sunday sighting.  With six B30 Orion Vs, 2006 and 2011 were doing the B30.

A few weeks ago, I saw a D40LFR doing a B30 run on the B-W Parkway. Someone else saw 60-BRT(!!) doing a run on there too.

I think Landover might have let a couple do shuttle work. I know I saw Western's Express LFA's, the 60-BRT's, Neos, and some Orion V's and LFR's of unknown depot doing the work this afternoon.

What's up with the bold on 6101-06 at Montgomery, they've been there now for a couple of months, no need to bold them anymore.  Of course I am talking to a brick wall, so nevermind.

Those Gilligs will be crushed, by a crusher at NIMCO. :D

WHOA, calm down princess, that crush thing was a joke, saw that funny haha emoticon (sp?) at the end.

With that said those Gilligs will be crushed at NIMCO or with some other crusher.

And also could we PLEASE stop with the bolding of 6101-06 being at Montgomery.

Only observe of the day was seeing a crushed 9378 rolling down I-95/I495.

What's up with the bold on 6101-06 at Montgomery, they've been there now for a couple of months, no need to bold them anymore.  Of course I am talking to a brick wall, so nevermind.

Those Gilligs will be crushed, by a crusher at NIMCO. :D

I meant ORANGE crushed!

he's just joking lol

anyways, didn't you email Ride-On about the orange crushing a while ago? if i remember correctly, you forwarded me the email and the response from them was that they simply didn't have the money to replace all the old signs, either that or they just don't wanna spend the money, and I don't blame them, because as long as the signs work, then they're fine

and btw can you please stop bolding 6101-6106 being at Montgomery routes and 4052-4065 being on Bladensburg routes? they have been where they are for a while now, it's no news to anyone anymore

There is a reason why I have to bold 6101-6106...  This is being done to further avoid confusion between these buses that came over from Annex & these buses (6179-6211) that Montgomery already has!

And the only new bus sighting of the day so far is a little further up this page (bolded in red).

but everyone in this site knows that by now, it's something that everyone has gotten used to

...plus, it saves you time from bolding stuff

The Helldorados are back on the road in Ride On land; saw a bunch of them on Nicholson's routes including the VanGo. No sign of the Champions though, 2 weeks and counting.

And in the LFA's getting around department: 6390 on the J4 and 6394 on the J5.

Saw 5714 this morning with no ads on it.  Made me think of the good old days when Ride On buses didn't have exterior ads

That may be so, but in my opinion, it would probably cause confusion.  Perhaps you should include a key to your posts in bold, red etc.

It used to be that Ride-On only had ad's INSIDE the buses & they were for County Run services ONLY.

Those were the days. . .  but I also remember when you could LEGALLY smoke on the DC Transit buses and those drivers also made change!

From yesterday:

Ride-On
5333 and 5349 on the 34
5410, with the paint scheme that can never, ever, ever be changed at ANY time, on the 32 (Woodrock)
5411 on the 30
5413 on the 96
5416 on the 30
So far, it is still unknown if 5406, 5409, 5412, and 5415 are at Nicholson yet, if they are, then Nicholson will have all the 5400s

WMATA
2079 on the J9 (then J7 on the way back)
6206, 6207, 6209, 6210 remain at Montgomery, seen on J7/J9

that's pretty much it, I was only in Bethesda yesterday

the suburban Orion Vs are tricky, they have moved a lot recently, but here's my breakdown:

4388-4389 - originally at Annex? (not sure)
4396-4412 - originally at Montgomery

later...(around 2005-2006, give or take)

4388-4389 remains at Annex
4396-4401 remains at Montgomery
4402-4412 moves to Annex

then from that time until today...
4400-4401 moves to Annex
Montgomery's 4390s went to Arlington for a week or 2 then came back to Montgomery
4389 has been spotted on Landover routes, 4388 remains at Annex
Southeast division closes
the rest of Montgomery's 4390s move to either Annex and/or Royal (after SE closes and Royal begins to help out Annex with W13, P17, etc routes)
some of Annex's 4400s move to Royal

today...
4388-4389 are Landover now I think, not sure
4396-4412 are at Annex, not sure if Royal still has some or if they help out with Oxon Hill routes anymore

but like I said, I'm not sure, and it's hard to keep track since they moved a lot

George,

Did you leave 4390-4395 off since those are B30 units?  The B30 has only existed for about 6 years or so, those buses had a history before then but I couldn't tell you where they were prior to the B30 service starting (obviously we know where they have been since).

Also, as a N.B., 4400 and up were originally the SmartMover buses, though someone may need to correct me on the lower limit of that range.

I didn't even realize that, I thought the B30 has been around longer than that, I was assuming that 4390-4395 were at Landover their whole lives.

But like I said, I'm not completely sure when it comes to the past, I just gave my best estimates.

I remember when the SmartMover buses still had the lettering over the windows, but I'm not sure of the numbers either.  I do remember it was the 4400s, but I don't know if it was all of them or not.

Agreed!  ...and I cannot remember where 4390-4395 were prior to the B30 startup.  Although it's quite possible that Four Mile had them, I can't remember those buses being there.  I'm thinking this is when FMR had 9830-9835 which was probably enough since this was prior to 5A service to IAD.  I don't remember if FMR ever had 4390-4395 (or any of the 43/4400 suburbans), so I'd guess that the B30 buses were at the Annex and/or Royal.

Wayne never curse the Annex ;D those airport buses never been at the Annex unless they were Original suburban seated buses before the B30.

The luggage racks were only installed when the B30 began service.

I'm inclined to say they only moved to Landover when the B30 started up, but I couldn't take a guess as to where they came from.

I haven't seen a 4400 in awhile, but perhaps the outline of the woman wrap that was on some of the windows is still visible.

No the 4400s are just plain buses never seen a women outline on them when they were at the Annex.

Yes, because the SmartMover branding was removed from 4400s long before they left Montgomery.  Also any traces of it would've gone away when those buses went though rehab.

That reminds me: anyone have pictures of these buses when they had the branding?  I sure don't...

Those are some of my fondest memories of the '97/'98 Orion Vs, except those horrible Vultron signs.  The original wheels were also cool.

I hope so but all I can say is that Landover might be resting all the airport buses.

Yes. Ive been seeing alot of B30 buses on regular routes lately since the month stare ted.  Even this morning i saw a B30 bus on the F4 this morning. Unless the new 63/6400's are getting the suburban treatment or some B30 buses are broken down and are in for repairs.

Right right well when that happen Annex we are going to send them with you down there lol, but one thing I am going to miss about the 4390's they had speed like hell on 295. 4394 was the best one it use to hit a clear 90 going up and down.

Ah yes send them here so they can strip them and put new seats in them lol, but for now it looks like they're staying at Landover but perhaps the Blade can take the B30 and put the 60BRTs on that route.

The B30 only gets busy at certain times of the year (Thanksgiving). That's the main times when they'll put the tics on the B30 to support the capacity. Other than that, it runs pretty well even with a good load.
Title: Re: October 2009 Observations
Post by: NewFlyer9736BCT on October 19, 2009, 11:36:25 AM
In that case, the 5A is the one that really does need the artics...since most of the passengers are commuters trying to get to and from work from Herndon/Monroe Park and Ride

...but if that's the case, then there will be a lot of complications, such as the fact that the tics are all painted in the local scheme (not that it really matters but to some people it might), and where the 2700s will go, and the fact that only Bladensburg can receive FMR's buses...

that comes to my next possible solution, move some 2700s to Bladensburg for use on the B30...I know Landover does B30 but that can be changed. That's just an idea though...

I think an order of about 15-20 suburban seated, luggage rack-equipped clean diesel or hybrid buses would be a good idea for an exclusive fleet primarily for the 5A and B30.

Oh, I rode 4380 on the last B30 last night and saw 4379 broken down at the Southwest terminal stop at BWI.

RIDE ON NOTES:
CONFIRMED: All of the 2009 40' Gillig Advantage hybrid buses are numbered 5315-5349.

METROBUS NOTES:
In recent months, we have noticed that we are seeing more 40-footers on the H8, a Northern-operated route.  All of Northern's 30-foot Orion Vs have moved to either Annex, Landover or Western.
How late are u Northern's 30ft Orion Vs are at western except 3924 which has been at the Annex for months now like since last year and as for the H8 yes 40fts and the new DE37LFA all operate on that routes.
One more thing 4018, 4020, 4022 and 4022 are sitting at Landover possibly awaiting retirement.

Wow really? Dude 40 footers have been on the H8 for the longest. Here at Landover we only have 3900-3907. The rest are at Western and Annex.

WMATA

9396 on the F4
4286 on the S9
4233 on the 38B (mid day West Ox run I believe, no idea why though)
6441 on the D6 (must be a PM Western run)
9351 and 9406 on the J4
4101 on the J4 - I rode this from Silver Spring to Bethesda, this baby runs NICE, I hope it doesn't go soon
An unknown express 6400 at Silver Spring, leaving the station on Colesville Rd with a route number on the back, but it was too far for me to see, I guess it was a Z line route.
6456 on the J7 then J9, this bus does NOT have suburban seating, but it DOES have the newer signs like 2815-2817 and 2665 have.

that's all I have for now, more sightings to come later, and pics

6441 on the D6. I guess Western has a few rush hour blocks on that line.
I figured those express buses wouldn't have suburban seating.

yeah Western always did some D6 runs in the PM rush
and who knows, maybe 6458 and up are suburbans, but we have yet to find out. it makes sense if 6456 was regular seating because 6457 has been in service at Western for a couple months, and we would have known by now whether or not 6455 and 6456 (the missing links at the time) are suburbans.

OK - Now I have to ask.  After several times of people asking you to stop listing your sightings of 6101-6106 in boldface, since they've been at Montgomery for several months... You stated that you needed to do this to reduce confusion (I still don't understand) with 6179-6211.  You also listed a DE42LFA in red which you said was to indicate the bus was newly transferred.  Now in this post you have 2814 in blue.  If boldface is to eliminate confusion with like buses, red is to indicate recently moved buses... Please tell me what does the blue mean?

the colors of red and blue simply mean whether they are painted in the new local or express schemes...the normal black font means they are in the older scheme.

Now Christopher, believe me when I say this: EVERYONE knows that 6101-6106 is at Montgomery now, it's is NOT NEWS, it's been like this for MONTHS now, same with 4052-4065 being at Bladensburg

That's what I (and any logical person would think) thought, but the quote below is his explanation which is why I ask the question today.

Quote from: ChristopherF on October 14, 2009, 10:32:20 AM
There is a reason why I have to bold 6101-6106...  This is being done to further avoid confusion between these buses that came over from Annex & these buses (6179-6211) that Montgomery already has!

And the only new bus sighting of the day so far is a little further up this page (bolded in red).

Be on the lookout for PRTC buses in Tysons Corner soon.  They are starting a new route as part of the HOT Lane construction along the Beltway.  Glad I put those headers in there a couple of years ago before I left!!  I am curious about their beginning point in Woodbridge but I guess they wanted to try and capture some of the VRE crowd from Fredericksburg, which makes some sense.  It's too bad the bus won't have any other connectivity with other routes except at the 123 commuter lot.

I think they should have started it at the Transit Center to provide better connectivity. I did see something a while back about a Tysons route.

My guess is that it was the only bus available at the time. Bad decision. Imagine a 35ft bus on the 8 line here in Baltimore. Gives me the chills just thinking about. One thing I learned from riding the S2 is that it always need a 40ft or higher bus.

this is what I was afraid would happen...the S line is absolutely no place for a 3700 to snoop around, as well as the 70s line
was this during any peak hours?

Can't say I'm suprised.  Sort of reminds me of the two times I rode 5168 & 5169 on the F4 during rush hour.  Also we should keep in mind that it's possible that 3768 was covering for another bus that may have broken down, had an accident etc.

Better they send out a 30 foot bus than nothing at all.

I once saw a 3900 on the N4 during rush hour that was SRO.  Also, I think someone here once said they saw a jam loaded Orion II on the even 30s.

During rush hour.I have a better question why is Northern and West Ox getting 37LFA's? I thought Western and Bladensburg was getting them?

Maybe that was just a rumor or Western and Bburg will get them later. Either way, the 3700s are very suitable on the H8 and G2 in my opinion.

Does anyone know how many of these buses WMATA is getting? the highest I've seen so far is 3769

Did some much needed shopping yesterday at white flint mall.. So I left H and M and drove around where the shoppers is to get a glimpse of Montgomery Division from the sidewalk I counted 11 9800 series with there numbers gone and 5 9700 series (knew there were 9800 cuz if the dual tailpipe) and 9817 was there along with 4100..So I'm assuming the back wall at Montgomery is the deadline..? I also counted 4 metro D's in the area with all the other revenue buses. 978XX was on the S2 yesterday also headed downtown

Hello,

Today I was over at CET today and I saw the New tics, I was shocked as hell I saw that window on the back on that tic I was like O YEA ...... I couldnt belive that ordered them like that I cant wait to see them on the street ........ Can anyone get pics of them please and post

What garage are they going to operate from do anyone know?
Here is a thread i made that has pics of them. http://forums.dctransit.info/index.php?topic=1033.msg10339#msg10339
The new tics will operate out of Montgomery and Northern and maybe west ox because that's what an operator told us. They may be in service next week so be prepared.

The way it's going at WMATA I won't believe it till I see it.  Montgomery definitely, but anywhere else is possible that can support them.

Speculation was that Western, Bladensburg would get the DE37LFAs.........that didn't happen.

I think speculation was that Landover would get the first 48........didn't happen.

Well i agree with you on the "believe until i see it" thing but the 70,71 line needs them badly. I also think that bladensburg might get them even tho they already got the lower 5400's and maybe West Ox. But lets see what happens tomorrow because thats when i heard they will be out.

I don't see which West Ox routes in which artics would be useful for, although it would be a great idea to have the new artics at Montgomery and Landover (both of which are artic capable), or have them at Northern and move the Neos to Montgomery and Landover, and maybe a split between Northern and one of those 2 divisions with the new artics. This way, we finally get something different on the 70, as well as actual (hopefully) FAST artics on Montgomery routes, and artics period on Landover routes.

How funny would it be to see an artic on the 84 or F12/F13 if they move to Landover? lol...

Oh man do you know how bad I want to see artics on Landover routes. Landover needs them just as bad (well a little bit) as Montgomery. I'm going tomorrow to do some fanning before I head to work. So i'll have pics, videos and etc. of them. Hopefully.

Bladensburg getting the 62LFA's!?!?!? If anything I could see them getting the pre-rehab Neo's. If they're keeping the 60BRT's from the X2, they'd keep anything LFA from being eaten up by H Street too!

Cases like this make me wish Houston was still leasing out their Neo artics, or that Mississauga didn't scrap their (original) D60LF's or that someone had secondhand artics to hold the fort until the stimulus artics come around and H Street is finished.
