The Blender / R.I.P. WRC-TV Sportscaster George Michael
December 24, 2009, 05:05:13 PM
This morning, Christmas Eve 2009, NBC-TV sports reporter, George Michael, passed away at Sibley Hospital in Washington DC. He was only 70.

George built The Redskins Report & also The Sports Machine, which was broadcast nationally in syndication.

He served as Sports Reporter for WRC-TV from 1980 - 2007.

I'm sure that Jack Kent Cooke, is meeting him at the great beyond, with a cigar & a bottle of brandy to share.

George, you will be missed. :'(

The Blender / NY Giants vs The Redskins
December 22, 2009, 02:10:11 AM
I KNOW Washington had a big snowstorm over the weekend, and traffic was all messed up, streets unplowed etc etc, but. . . .

(It hurts me to say this)
Did the REDSKINS forget the game was at their HOME STADIUM, in front of a National Audience?

C'Mon MAN!
Please fire Jim Zorn NOW!!!

Beyond the Beltway / DisneyWorld Buses
December 15, 2009, 12:55:51 AM
I am just back for taking my 20 month old Grandson to see Santa at Disneyworld here in Florida.

I know some of you think, working at DisneyWorld is a Mickey Mouse operation ( smile ) but the way they move people around the 43 square miles of the theme park & its hotels & other resorts is astounding.

Its where I started driving buses professionally in the 80's. The RTS buses I shot today, looked to be the same buses I drove back then (even tho all I encountered were all Orange crushed).

I have some Gillig pics from Disney to share, but the hour is late.

Hope you all enjoy.

DC Transit Today / Prince William to Tysons Corner
October 31, 2009, 12:32:59 AM
As Perry mentioned last week, here is a piece from the Washington Post's DR Gridlock, about the service to Tysons from PW County.

New Tysons Buses
Virginia's effort to get commuters into and out of Tysons Corner during construction of the HOT lanes and the Metrorail line will include a new express bus service from Prince William County. Starting Nov. 9, the buses will travel between the VRE station at Woodbridge and the Route 123/Interstate 95 commuter lot and 15 stops in Tysons.

There are low introductory rates. In fact, for the first week, the service will be free. Then the service, operated by the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission, will be about half what the normal fares are for its OmniRide buses for six months. So Tysons riders will pay a one-way fare of $2.40 for SmarTrip and $3 for cash. Monthly VRE pass holders can ride free to Tysons, but have to pay for the return trip.

Also helpful during the construction disruptions will be a new midday shuttle bus to circulate people within Tysons. On Nov. 23, this free service will begin operating every 10 minutes from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The shuttle will be operated by the Fairfax Connector, and it's possible that the route could be modified based on ridership. If it's low along some parts of the route, it could be shifted to where the demand is greater.

Beyond the Beltway / HARTLINE
October 30, 2009, 10:25:50 PM
Hillsborough Area Regional Transit

I just happened to be at my local WALLYWORLD (WalMart) and snapped this picture of a bus, as I was leaving the store. I would have tried for a front shot, but I had Ice Cream to bring home.

Wal-Mart has allowed HARTLINE to construct small bus stop waiting areas, to serve as layover points for a couple of routes here in Tampa.

This is a rear view of a 40' GILLIG. Its a hybrid/Electric bus. .  Clean Air Technology
The bus is also 5 years old, having entered service in 2004.
The paint scheme is also an older scheme. The new scheme starting arriving in 2006 with the new buses & currently the buses are getting a visual upgrade.

I promise to get more pix, as I can

In a remarkable bid to attract disillusioned Redskins fans, the Dallas Cowboys announced Monday that they are establishing a special relationship with Washington supporters that will allow fans of the Landover team to join the Texas franchise while preserving their liturgy and spiritual heritage, including fat men who wear dresses and pretend to be hogs.

The worldwide Redskins fan base has been racked by 10 years of conflict over the interpretation of holy football scripture that has led to clashes over the West Coast offense, pricey free agents and stadium parking fees.

The Cowboys' plan "reflects a bold determination by Dallas to seize this moment and do what it can to reach out to those who share its stance on such ecclesiastical matters as strong offensive lines, play-calling in the red zone and, duh, actually winning football games," said Harvey Cleats, dean of the Virginia Gridiron Seminary. "It is very, very bold."

The new system will give the Cowboys a way to capitalize on tensions within the Redskins community.

The Redskins broke from reality in 1999 when King Danny the First bought the team. With his loyal retainer, Prince Vinny of Cerrato, seated at his right hand, King Danny has brought such hardships on Redskins worshipers that some worry for their very souls. FedEx Cathedral has been the site of much garment-rending this season, made worse when fans' sackcloth and ashes have been confiscated by King Danny's henchmen.

However, observers are amazed at the boldness of the Cowboys' move.

"We realize this may come as a surprise," said Dallas spokesman Jimbob Jockstrap. "We know that many Washington fans have grown up wondering if there's anything worse than being a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. And now they have an answer: being a fan of the Washington Redskins."

For years, the Washington Redskins have struggled to reconcile their warring factions: Portis versus Sellers, Snyder versus Turner, Snyder versus Schottenheimer, Snyder versus Spurrier, Snyder versus reality.

Under the new system, Redskins fans would transfer their loyalty to Dallas but be allowed to keep some traditions from their liturgy. For example, they would be allowed to sit together at Dallas games, recite their holy verses (including "Hail to the Redskins, full of grace, Jim Zorn is with thee") and possess such holy relics as burgundy-and-gold "No. 1" foam fingers.

"We do not make this decision lightly," said Redskins fan Buster Tailgate, leader of a splinter sect that worships Saint Sonny Jurgensen. "But, c'mon, how much more can we be expected to take?"

The Blender / Its Time for Zorn to go!
October 12, 2009, 06:02:45 PM

The REDSKINS gave Detroit a bailout with a DETROIT win
The REDSKINS should have LOST to Tampa Bay
The REDSKINS gave CAROLINA a bailout with a CAROLINA win.

The Redskins play against Kansas City this Sunday at FedEx Field (I'm wagering for a Kansas City Win) And the the following Monday Night, the EGGLES come to town for a Monday Night game on ESPN.

With Danny, bringing in Sherm Lewis as a "consultant", and reports of Danny, flying to Denver to meet w/ Shanihan, the writing is on the wall, that Zorn appears to be on the way out. Even the PTI guys (Wilbon & Kornheiser) say that Zorn is 1 of 3 coaches on the hot seat (Their pick is the Raiders coach as 1st to go).

The Redskins can't hire Shanihan outright, because of the ROONEY RULE, except as an interim basis, I feel the writing is on the wall, that Zorn is over his head & will be unemployed before years end. (If you work at the unemployment office, and lose your job, where do you go the next day?).

I feel the pain of all the Redskins fans. I am one.

Least we don't have Rush Limbaugh wanting to buy the Redskins. .  thats all we need. .  Rush Limbaugh in DC!

Danny. .  save face. .  get rid of Zorn NOW!!

The Blender / October 4, 2009 Buccaneers vs Washington
October 04, 2009, 04:03:02 AM
Today, Sunday 4Oct09, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the owners of the worst streak in the NFL (26 straight losses), come to Washington (Landover or RalJon) to face Washington, who's NFL Team, just bailed out Detroit (again) with a win, stopping their losing streak at 18 straight games.

If you play against the worst team in the NFL, and they (Detroit Lions) beat you, does that make you the worst team in the NFL??

The mood in Tampa is somewhat upbeat, being we have benched Leftwich (a D.C. native) and gone w/ a 2nd year QB whos never started a game in the NFL. Tampa's defense, once one of the NFL's best, now gives up an average of 200yds on the ground. (Clinton Portis should have a field day :) )

In reality, do I see the Redskins improve to 2-2, or do I see them fall to 1-3??
Do the BUCCANEERS improve to 1-3, or fall to 0-4??

Will Kenny Albert, Moose & Goose, brodcast the game, or will FOX use their 3rd string broadcast team? Will my wife allow me to watch this game, or will she make me do yardwork?

I'm hoping for a REDSKINS win, but I'm also prepared for a Tampa win, being we live in Tampa.

When does the NCAA Mens Basketball season start?
(Fear the Turtle!!)

Newsroom / THE DC SNIPER
September 16, 2009, 01:09:13 PM
Its being reported the the DC Sniper, John Allen Muhammad, has been given a date of November 10, 2009, to be put to death, in the DC sniper killings of 2002.

He & his "son" Lee Boyd Malvo, were the pair of DC snipers that shot 13 people, 10 fatally, including Ride-On operator Conrad Johnson, (the final victim).

My personal opinions are:
Why is it taking so long to carry out the justice in this case.
Its a shame that Lee Malvo, wont suffer the same fate.

As a former co-worker of Conrad Johnson, I'm glad to see that his killer is finally getting what he deserves.

R.I.P. Conrad.

Relics & Remnants / The Ralph Kramden/Jackie Gleason bus
September 15, 2009, 05:27:52 PM
Attached, is the replica of the bus our leader, RALPH KRAMDEN , as portrayed by Jackie Gleason (R.I.P.), drove in brooklyn, when he was a star on the TV show: "The Honeymooners".

I didn't know what forum to post this pic, so I figured relics & remnants was the closest to post w/o offending anyone here.  :)

Visitor Log / OBAMA march on Washington (Sept 11/12) 2009
September 08, 2009, 11:48:55 AM

Before they decided to "MARCH ON WASHINGTON" this weekend, my wife & I booked a trip to DC.

The daughter of my best friend is getting married/wedding reception this Wed & Fri. Then my Hi School reunion committee is celebrating the fact that we are all turning 50 this year & its time for a party (Saturday), then all the talk radio right & left wingers decided to have a MARCH on DC/Tea bag party this weekend as well.

(Boy am I glad I pre-paid my hotel & RSVP'd a rental car before the march was thought of)

Aside from dinner at my FAVORITE Italian restaurant Thurs night (Pete/Mike/Mario's restaurant) and before the reception, I will be bus fanning Thur night & most of the day Friday, starting near the 50side, then Silver Spring, and then Da Rock. Gotta see what they doing to construct the SSTC & see some peeps. Also gotta take the pic of the statute of the mayor of Silver Spring ("Don't worry about it"). I also promised a friend to take some current pix of PG Plaza & the Double T ranch (Tick-Tock).

MAYBE I will see some of you good peeps around this weekend?   ::)

The Blender / ICE ROAD TRUCKERS
August 24, 2009, 07:51:47 PM
Last night, while watching an episode of ICE ROAD TRUCKERS (HISTORY CHANNEL), there was an advertisement for an insurance company about 1/2 way thru the episode. (let me set it up). . .

The woman was waiting at a street corner, decided to take a step backwards as a bus was coming down the street. The bus was METROBUS (number 2308) HOWEVER, it was a GMC RTS type. (9000 & 9100 were the series).
It even had the green flip-dot destination sign (Said Metrobus). I couldn't TIVO (Isn't technology wonderful?) the block numbers etc, but it was a RTS painted in the EXACT METROBUS colors that the RTS's were painted in.

Did anyone else see that commerical?

No Bus Operator would ever pass a group of people, with a NOT IN SERVICE posted sign, and splash them as they drove by. .  would they??  ::)

(Bladensburg) Once on Bolling AFB, you had to have a US Military ID card to proceed onto base. (in 1978, my 1st duty station was Anacostia Naval Station, but we were housed at Bolling Field, so I rode this bus on occasion)

*86* COLLEGE PARK to (unknown)

McDonalds after 2:AM for the bus to the NAVY YARD)
*70* SILVER SPRING
*90* Florida Ave/U Street/Navy Yard?
*9* FT BELVIOR

Now that I posted some history about how the buses operated in the 70's & up to present day, in Montgomery & parts of PG County, does anyone else have personal recollections of the routes in VA, Southern PG, DC? Lets post them & answer the missing links.

If memory serves me right, by this time, buses going to MONTGOMERY MALL, had a stop in back of the mall, next to the SEARS entrance to the mall. This stop was used till sometime in 1990-91. When I 1st started for Ride-On, the 35 & 38's I drove also used this stop.
